You'll be tickled to know I've been reading Walden in the two long weekends I've been camping recently. I've never read it. I knew it was about living simply in a cabin next to the pond. I didn't know it was a loquacious and incisive rant on the evils of consumption. I've so far come away with two take-aways: 1) If he saw the state of society today he'd shoot himself. 2) He'd love Putt.

I think your right. Henry David Thoreau would take one look at a 3,000 sq foot home on a postage stamp sized lot, snd he’d kill himself.

I'm about a quarter of the way in. I'll get through it, I'm pretty sure. Funny how our language and cultural contexts have changed so much over time. I only "get" about 1/2-2/3 of what he writes. I'd have to spend hours looking up all his references.

That's the sound you make when you cliff-dive into a lake. You know, that feeling of, there's no turning back now...floating in space without referent...the soon-coming end that could be a thrill or disaster. Well, as many of you have experienced, that's sort of the feeling as you approach launch. But "launch" is a bit of a misnomer; the true commitment has been happening over and over for months: retirement; moving into a truck; putting the house under construction; the ticking time bomb of cash on hand vs. how long to sell the house and get the dough. It seems like I've been in mid-air forever.

The good news is that everything is pretty much going to plan; I'm maybe 3 weeks behind my ideal schedule. Currently: House sells by mid-August; get the money late September; engine and mechanical work done by November 1st; then get out of here and head South before too much snow flies.  We'll see.  

Wally is doing a great job on the house and is about halfway through. Complete paint job; new lighting fixtures all around; new appliances; and some bathroom remodeling. All for around $3500 plus my small enclosed trailer, a table saw, and all the tools I'm not bringing with me. Like I've said, he's one of my best friends. He may make me $20k in house value because that's what I would have paid someone else to do it.

I'm also having all the carpets replaced, but I don't have to pay for that until I get the money from the house.

What I can control directly is finishing the Phase One Putt build, and plenty of good stuff has happened. I'm gonna push the button on this one and go rummage through the pictures for you guys to see.

One of the guys there works for a big aluminum fabrication outfit. He saw the list and had the perfect solution to one of the items on it.

Fits perfectly in my sink to fill it.



How cool is that!? It's built so that it can contain about a gallon of water, but will dispense it only up to a certain level. Problem is Dart is small and doesn't really drink that much water, and I like to keep it fresh, so I only fill it up a small amount. But it's still cool as hell.

Real life has just overtaken the time/opportunity/desire to post much. I been lurking in spare moments though, waiting 'til I had a good day to post up. When will YARC Camp be firing up?

The biggest remaining piece of plywood construction is the cockpit console. Dart needs a really good place to watch the world go by, and his current box is too small. I need a place to keep my coffee cup, water bottle, cough drops, smokes, glasses, maps, flashlight, and notepad and pen. This one was tricky.



I just kinda felt my way into it.











And viola! 



I didn't want to break stealth, so I shot for a utilitarian look. Looks pretty work truck-like to me. 

The little coffee cup holder is on the left side.

Well that's pretty cool looking. I'm guessing the ledges on the left side of Dart's seat will be steps for him to go up and down? Routers are most wonderful tools and so often over looked.

You got it, Mo, I love my router. It scares me; I've got a great deal of respect for it; but, man, what a tool! A router, a jig saw, a belt sander, a counter sink drill, maybe a Kreg tool, and some glue and screws, and you can make just about anything from good 3/4 ply alone.

And yup, the top level is a bit of a stretch for Dart, the intermediate step now makes it easy-peasy for him to jump up there. And now that his box is bigger, he can jump directly into it from the driver's seat.
