Cravings
#1
For the last week I have had a craving for good, old fashioned meat loaf and all the assorted trimmings.

Today on the way home after a lengthy visit to the VA , I stopped at a place called Cotten Patch Cafe that someone had recommended to satisfy that silly craving. Funny how things just stick in my mind, envisioning a leisurely meal and just relaxing.

It was about 1530 so no too many people in the place and I got a good table and was promptly greeted. Ordered my Coke, told the server I knew what I wanted and ordered the meatloaf. The Dr had told me to eat greens because my blood was so thin so I could have a salad, one of the forbidden foods while on warfarin. Extra ranch. Life was good.

In about two minutes my Coke and salad are brought out, service was good so far. As I am pouring the dressing on my salad my meatloaf appears. About two minutes between getting salad and entree. I ask the server if he can put my food under the heat lamp until I finish my salad. He takes the meatloaf away.

In five minutes he’s back with the meatloaf and I am still munching my salad. So while I eat my salad my food is cooling off nicely. After eating half of my salad I started on the main course. Meatloaf had sat awhile, one side was ‘off’ color but I ate part of it and the warm mashed potatoes and broccoli and cheese.

I ask for my check. I had spent maybe 20 minutes on my ‘relaxing ‘ meal and was a bit bothered. I paid, gave a 5 dollar tip on a 15 dollar tab. After I had signed and paid I asked the server to send his manager over. He asked if something was wrong but I just asked him to send the manager over.

The manager was a very pleasant woman and asked what I needed. I told I stopped to have a relaxing meal after spending the day being poked and prodded at the VA and my meal there was in no way relaxing. Rushed from start to finish and there were no other customers in my servers section. She offered to comp my meal and I told her she missed the point.

My meal had already been paid for, waiter was tipped and I wanted nothing for free. What I did want was not to be rushed, I wanted to be served fresh food and time enough to eat my damn meal and finish my Coke.

I did get rid of that craving though.

Rob,
Next time I see you, I will make you "Mumsy's meatloaf". My kids say its the best in the world and Hubby says that it's "awesome, the best I've ever had". And he's 61, he'd know otherwise.

Thanks Ted, I guess my expectations were too high.

Would love to try your meatloaf. Another meal with good company is always a treat.

Well, Ted beat me to it, but I make a pretty fair meatloaf, myself. One of my verrrrry few specialties. Happy to be next in line to feed you, Gunny! And Ed would probably be glad, too, since we have no oven in the van, thus no baked/roasted stuff. LOL Erm, my gravy, not so much, though, I'm afraid. I'll work on it.

They had the gravy trick down, open a can of Campbell’s Tomato soup and pour over the meat.

I make it but it’s a rare treat for me.

Thanks for the invitations.

When we travel, I have made meat loaf in the road pro cook box. Left overs make pretty good sandwiches.
I'm not lost. I'm exploring.

Angry  Gunny if I have a salad with my meal I always ask for it ahead of my food.  Doesn't do a damn bit of good either!

My son has told me more than once that I can get "a little bitchy" when my foods not right.  I'm not ugly or rude because food service is how I supported myself for many years.     I just say what's wrong with my food and how I expect it to be corrected, over and over until I get what I'm expected to pay for.

I too will volunteer a Meat Loaf to the cause when/if our paths ever cross.  I hope I have the equipment I need at the time.
My favorite meatloaf is cooked in a old cast iron skillet and fried potatos/onions seasoned with bacon in another iron skillet, & unsweetened corn bread cooked in.........iron skillet.  I recon we could add some greens or some such.  I'd have to borrow/buy another iron skillet...naw they'd be OK in stainless I guess Wink

Do the RoadPros come in different sizes?     I think we need a Meatloaf Recipe thread!
