So it begins...... Battery spot welder

My existing BSW will probably work ok, but it is kind of luck of the draw as to whether the MOSFETs are well matched.

the 0.15 Nickel strio iz supposed tk arrive today, but i want to use the antispark XT90 connectors with it.

wWth the BSW basically shorting the batttery, using my Deka gc-2's means unhooking all lights and fans lest they be smacked around by transients and release their magic smoke.

my still healthy enough 22ah agm is a few years old, and below the 25to 55ah range recommended.

The pouch Lipos are a possibility, as is a larger new AGM, for powering the BSW independent tly of my GC2s that have a 5/17 build date.
ive been keeping them topped up mostly via powermax, and am notreally sure of their remaining capacity and health as i have no AH counter on it, and have not depleted them enough to see how much they gobble from the 100 amp powermax.

Got this nice little beach to ourselves right now.

We explored an area today, that was too low a tide to access yesterday.

Once beyond, with tide still going out, it kind of felt like lion witch wardrobe zone.

Definite impression that no sapiens had been there in a long while, and that residents there were unused to trespassers.

one group of sheephead fish, at least 10 strong, seemed to stand guard at my approach and only reluctantly split, and boiled that water behind me as i coasted past the area they were protecting, and Fiona was mysteriously silent despite total awareness of them.

A little further on, something we disturbed was either a large fish, or a small alligator.

Fiona, instead of barking furiously, lay down and was silent, which was enough for me to reverse thrust, at which point the something rather large said good idea, swam underneath us, and Fiona started sniffing furiously, but laying down centered, stable.

Water clarity deep inside, was poor, but was soon even worse with whatever we spooked and which spooked us,. darted just below., and was big enough i could feel its displacement.

In the 10 minutes we were there, the tide had drained enough it was almost get off and walk through the super narrow, shallow opening, with about 2 knots of current spilling out.

But the shallowest , narrowest part, was over oyster shell beds. Super sharp and dangerous,. for a bare foot.

Sounds like adventure dog will remember this one.
Manatee size ?

It was way too shallow for a Manatee, and they leave a disinctive wake.
Wasnt that big either.

Maybee a big old catfish.

while it was a fairly windy day, tucked up against the mangroves in the shade, there was no wind, and was super glassy.

I can stand in kayak to get a better view down into water, but the polyp flexes so much underfoot, I want to brace it from bekow, and the paddle ia too short for comfotable stand up paddling.

Paddling 9 or ten miles over the previous 3 days had me tame break today, and the n it rained. much needed rain.

I ordered the purple BSW, and another BSW that one youtuber was able to successfully weld 0.4 mm of sandwiched copper and nickel strips. Luca has no in depth review of the this particular model. They both are around 20$, so no huge deal if I fry one prematurely. I figure 3 should get me through one battery pack.

A 5200 mah 80C 3S Lithium polymer battery has also been ordered, about 30$.

Luca says 5000mah and 50c+ Lipo is needed, or 45ah of new AGM.

The LIPO, is cheaper and a fraction of the size and weight of an AGM.
So that decision was easy.

80C x 5.2 is 416 amp surge rating.
Kind of amazing that such a small battery can support asuch a load, but the lithium jump starters use these Lipo cells and reportedly work very well.

Some heatshrink large enough to fit over 14, or 20 18650, and the cells themselves, is all i need to order, in order to start assembling new 7S battery, with 1400 more mah than the Chinese one successfully towing the F-yak to the launch and back.

Probably hold off on 10S, for now.

Paddling 10 miles , not bad , if it was me add uphill , both ways..
Good deal on the LI battery.
That will add to your paddling range considerably or eliminate paddling on some voyages !
The island view shot looked like a lucky dog to me ! Both of ya !
Maybe a paddle board paddle would be long enough for standing ?

i started this flat water thing on a borrowed stand up paddleboard.

I pretty much was forced to despise those who rode SUPs in the surf. and will be forever biased against them, and even in flat water, they irritate me a bit.

It js good exercise, works muscles not regularly used , but when I tried the kayak, i was pretty sold.on the lumbar support, and the speed, and i can still stand, and get that perspective from 6' above water surface, seeing things below the surface easier, and see things farther away.

The fins on the Sups present issues in the super shallow waters, unless one walks all the way forward, which is not.possible with fiona perched up there.

Also, in strong winds, SUPs suck..hard to get any momentum upwind, and hard to steer. I'd often just prone paddle to get directly upwind. for exercise, and then let wind land chop push me back, far faster than expected but going to explore sedately, in 10mph+ winds, is out.

A while back i hooked a bungee to the nose of my sisters SUP, and towed her about a mile upwind while she was on her knees, just paddling, not having to worry about steering.

I coukld not store an electric skateboard inside a SUP,, or a prone paddleboard, or the wheels.

The kayak forces a narrower , less stable stance when standing, but my main concern is how much the plastic flexes under my feet when I stand up in it, which can remedy with support from.below.

The potential future electric stealth thrusters pose issues with shallow water, and Id only really want them in windy conditions or when I want to exploer farther away from the launch and can easily deploy them where shallow water grounding, is not a concern.

The 5.2AH 3S 11.1v LIPo baTtery is basically purchased just for the 18650/21700 cell spot welder, as My agms are too big or too small and too old.

It can of course power 12v fans and leds and such, and i almost bought 2, thinking of the 24v thrusters.

With the comfortable sapele bow platform, Fiona has shown no interest in sitting in the well behind me.
I do need some ballast back there to help steering, but when it gets rough, it is better she is back there.
A cooler filled with food and beer might not be enough ballast.
35 ah of agm likely would be.

Anyway, lts of fine tuning of the F-yak o come.

And i want to make a cart to pull fiona.on the Eskateboard, without a kayak under her.

the plastic wheels hubs are not so happy at 10 to q15 mph. for a mile, there are signs of melting....

Regarding the BSWs they all have 'gears' but the 'gears' are basicLky milliseconds of direct welding short.

Thicker nickel strips and weaker Batteries feeding the welder, need more milliseconds of direct sbort to achieve an adequate weld, and if the battery feexing the welder is too weaK, and the circuit voltage holding the mosfets open, fall too low, magic smoke ejection ensues.

Luca got a new 3s 5.0ah 50c baTtery , shortened the feed leads, and is claiming 5 ms is more than enough, but his older 40ah agm required 35ms or more and was far less consistent in selding performance.

So the battery feeding the BSW, and how one figures out how the two work together, is kind of trial and error, and bad ignorant error ejects magic smoke.

But magic smoke ejection is gonna happen, at some point.
Ill haVe 3 differsnt 20$ BSWs to play with, and the purple one can seemingly be modified pretty easily to prevent MSE.

Not a big fan of the paddle boards ,.
They sure were popular @ the boathouse rentals though..
But the board newbs WERE WAY funnier than the kayak newbs !
and they came back early sometimes too.
Just thinking the long paddle could be handy for standing as well as a push pole..but any suitable piece of wood would do in the shallows...
If you don't have a rod yet I'm thinking a little ugly stick dock runner with a decent reel and braid in the 30-50#range ....for that "Walter" that swam under you . Have pulled some nice sized stripers with such a rig. Fits in the backpack too. OH, add a small cast net for bait.
Keep the pup happy and have fun out there WIWM.

It will be interesting seeing how you sus out the battery/welding clues.
