scary smoke
#1
Was outside for a bit, came inside to no power. Found the outside breaker tripped. Came back inside and kept hearing a clicking noise from under my sink. Found this thing was making the noise and some smoke coming from it (not constant but every few seconds). Slightly warm to the touch but not hot. I've asked in the owners group what it was to, but all I get is that it needs to be replaced, it failed, etc. I've turned all breakers off except the main, AC, and "GP." The yellow part has 20 amp on it and my only 20 amp breaker is the microwave, but when I tested that, it wasn't the problem. So far with just those breakers on I'm getting no clicking and no smoke.

No outlets are on now with what I have off, but my 12v stuff is working and the coach batteries are charging (so my fridge will keep running).

I leave Wednesday to get the mobile tech guy to fix other things, so hoping he's qualified to fix this too. Ugh. I'll be sending him another message with these pictures.

It looks like a splice block, ? or maybe a fuse?

A guy just posted that he found it on eBay and it's a Molex Power Connector 194030014 20amp 600vac. I looked at it, but it looks like only the one side of it (where the clear top half is). I still don't know what THAT is, but at least I know what it goes to. But no power outlets is going to be a real PITA.

If it is a splice block.
Thinking just a junction box would fix ya up. .
Is the black wire your shore power cable ?
The other ones look like romex so it may be a splitter/splice that looks like it might be corroded or just breaking the connection somehow and getting resistive.
Stick with 12 volt stuff till the tech guy sees it ,,,smoke isn't something to ignore,,,,,I learned THAT the hard way too.. .
Bypass the thing with an extention cord for any AC power needs.
stay tuned

Don't think it's my shore power cord. Another guy in the owners group mentioned romex too and talked about using a metal junction box. I've emailed my tech guy and will call tomorrow. Yeah keeping all outlets off and will make do with 12v and the heavy duty extention cord I have. Now I'm thinking about selling the RV again lol. All this electrical stuff is so over my head. I know electrical will be in any vehicle I decide to live in though.

Even the new ones have issues ! Sometimes worse than an older rig...
Once you get through all the systems,,,,,,,,,,,,,you'll most likely be replacing it all l a second time. LOL
QC isn't something the RV mfgs are too famous for arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh
And they love cheap parts too ! Planned obsolescence , like most everything else these days.......
stay tuned

sometimes I think of it like a space shuttle. built with the lowest parts bidder! ugh

electrical is scary to me also Kyz. But fuses etc. like this burn out and fail as we all know. but electrical is something I never bothered to learn much about, not interested, lol, but in the end there is a big scary factor to it for me Smile Darn messing with propane is another thing I don't enjoy one bit!

at least your rv tech guy can tell ya all about it and give you some good info without wondering too much about it all, but in the end you got an informed answer on what happened.

Tech guy is going to come by tomorrow afternoon instead of waiting until Thursday. Whew. But I'm overwhelmed now because my substitute refrigerator wasn't cooling all night. It was hooked to 12v and it looked on (lights, temperature on/showing), but the cord I was using had a red light so I don't know if it's the cord or that 12v plug in spot. I have fridge on my jackery and it seems to be cooling back down. Can't wait to get there and get some things resolved, but hate the preparing to get moving part! The more issues, the bigger mess I seem to make.

Yep, something similar to these:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/334173419020?mkevt=1&mkcid=1&mkrid=711-53200-19255-0&campid=5338722076&customid=&toolid=10050&amdata=enc%3AAQAHAAAAkOuj4GaiS%2BsSqVonOVM22LAenCUd7du1RsBF4r2EW2QO3nd4DTPhqWjj862%2FQHHAQB%2Fdy3HMpPRW%2FQL1PbabsO0OxSR95oM2eEYfhUmN3OVbf%2BKc6RRR3HDYAti0vtoNUmxRY1mHCsesNDMN2T0uphSkSih%2FGuHnQkVltFAEgdoWzguaHJvgBAEYhT0TSYDmRQ%3D%3D

Oxidation accumulates, probably made worse in humid environments, and then the connection gradually gains more resistance, and then finally it overheats and fails, either slowly as in your case, which is good, or sometimes an actual fire can occur.

I'd say you were lucky it gave some warning before catching fire.

It will have to be replaced which is fairly simple but the cables need to be cut back some distance to get to good, shiny copper.
