Power tools and logic (yeah, sure)

I don't recommend it but I have even put a bolted a saw blade to one for small trees and big weed stalks. I was clearing a fence line at the time.

Star pattern. I had a knife like that. Doubled edged but a star pattern blade point. Was a bitch to stop the bleeding from a poke. Left it someplace in Croatia.

A story for a campfire. Remind me.

This string is kind of star-shaped, works well on this oatgrass.

Thanks for all the help, info and opinions

For those who helped me with this problem:. THANK YOU.

I bought the little (cheapest, $104) Ryobi gas trimmer and 2 gallons of NON-ETHANOL gas, and it's going like a champ.  Starts in four pulls or less every time.  It has more power than I had anticipated, and goes through this tall oatgrass like it's nothing.

I found a site online that gives the locations of all the stations that sell it: pure-gas.org, and there's one about four miles from me.  It only costs about 30 cents more than regular ethanol.

Thanks again for all the help.

I'd love to have Ethanol free gas option in California but the nearest is 90 miles away and likely well more than a dollar more so than E10.

I saw the E0 option in Utah but it was enough more per gallon, that I did not feel the extra MPGs would be worth it, and th landscape was not such that I felt I could accurately say how much better the mpgs would be for a tankful of that instead of E10.

Glad you got your new trimmer sorted. Might want to still take precautions when storing it for the winter, whether adding Stabil or making sure the carb bowl is empty, or both.

I usually run it dry for storage, but if I did use the Stabil, I would need to leave some gas in it, right?

I was born and raised in SoCal, but it wasn't so insanely stupid then.  Ever heard of Azusa?
