A Simple Woodstove DFM
#11
Wood in Western Kansas??? Are you sure, now? Big Grin

Yes, I think a flat top isn't too much to much of an accommodation to ask of my lazy self.
There's so many welding rods at the farm I doubt they'd miss a bucket full, so I'd better actually start material procurement.
And an actual plan.

For anyone who isn't familiar with Lloyd Kahn, he's the top promoter of self-built homes, both S&B and mobile.  He has several fascinating books (mostly good photos) showing the results from a lot of creative people.  He started with the famous 'Shelter' book in the early 70s, and just kept going.  Most of them are available through the library system.  If they aren't in your library, ask about an InterLibrary Loan (ILL).

Tiny Homes on the Move is strictly mobile, but most of his other books also include vehicular homes:
Builders of the Pacific Coast
Homework: Handbuilt Shelter
Tiny Home: Simple Shelter
Small Homes:  The Right Size

Thanks- They have six of his books; Tiny Homes on the Move is on the shelf downtown!
Maybe he'll have some pointers.

has all kinds of features built into his little ammo box, the only one that interested me was
the second burn pipe (1:06 you can see it for a moment)- seems simple and practical.
The corn/wood pellet hopper would catch on fire. I know where there's a scorched wall due to a hopper fire in a dedicated corn stove-
Damper can go in the chimney pipe.
Ammo cans are a bit too thin, even thicker stoves burn thru rather quickly.

Other than the flat top, slim's second burn, and a look at Mr. Kahn's ideas
I think it's just going to be mild steel, stick welded rectangle-
I need to stop thinking and do something even if it's wrong.

I actually have this book.  It's oversized and a little raggedy in places from being read so often.
This goes in my NWIH pile = NO WAY IN HELL AM I GETTING RID OF THIS.
I also still have the first copy of The Mother Earth News.  It's also a NWIH item.  I have most of the early years of TMEN.  The cover of one has a really nice lookig wood stove made from a electric hot water heater tank.  It stood upright.  It had a arched cut out place in the middle with a metal plate for cooking on.

There was a book about a owner built "House Trucks",  I believe it was in the '70s.  Also in that time frame one on owner built homes.  I remember various types of wood heat in some of them.   One of them had a pickup camper that looked like a covered wagon.  It always reminded me of watching a TV show called "Wagon Train" with Papa.

He was so far ahead of his time.  In the late 1950s he cut a hole in the side of the TV and rigged some head phones that plugged in so he could read while I watched cartoons and kids shows.  I remember all hell broke loose after he retired and Idea suggested to Mama she should wear them while her soap operas were on.  Damn that lady could cuss.  Huh
