I've also seen the mayhem caused by those who know they can come back and change whatever they wrote whenever. The ' post modified by xxxx at such and such a time' can help somewhat, but trolls be trolls and a 30 minute window is fine with me.

Although I have begun editing at minute 25 and clicked save changes at minute 31 only to be denied. A few curses and Oh well.

I moderate on a couple of forums where we have the time limit on editing for those same reasons. We dont get a lot of requests for editing after the time limit. I guess the members know that if they dont fix their posts quick, it will stay and they will look like a dumbass, so they are more careful to get it right the first time.

A suggestion if Gary wanted to turn off the time limit. If someone sees something derogatory, quote the post with your answer. The original poster cant edit it then because its in your post. You can then report it.

Gary will still have to go and delete the gaping assholes though

so if anyone want to volunteer to edit the gaping asshole out of 500 post i'll turn it off

The MyBB manual suggests these approaches:
  • purge user
  • delete posts option when deleting user
I don't know how up to date the info is.  I have not run a MyBB board.  I will say that in a couple decades participating in forums I've never seen anyone go back and mass-edit their own posts.  That would take much longer to do than to remove them.

My criticism of the timeout is not directed at this forum in particular nor any kind of dig at Gary;  I've said the same on CRVL before this fine forum was launched.  VDF and CRVL are literally the only two forums in those decades where I have encountered an editing time limit.

That's just not going to happen.

Anyone could just go out and randomly punch everyone on the street in the nose and run, but even insane people aren't that insane.

However, sane people are insane enough to believe most everyone is that insane.

I have seen it in San Francisco. The guy was insane and wanted his winter lodging on the dole. From what I see, this is “common” in large cities. I wish I had a solution.

leave it at 30 mins and protect the great information posted. look at it this way , you take the most informative poster who has given this site some of the best "how to's" discussions over the course of a year or two. then one day he/she gets a little ticked off and removes all they have posted , leaving holes of missing posts and images in countless threads and hurting any members coming later with the same problems.

I like the edit window. (even before I was a mod, so there's no bias!) I've been on forums in the past and some of the very long threads...20+ pages don't make a lot of sense because a lot of replies and additional info was in conjunction with posts that no longer existed or were changed too far past their original to make any logical conclusions out of it.

I can see a few areas where it would be useful such as with real time info on meet ups and such, but usually just going to the last page of the thread on those will get you to the current real time info you need anyways.

Ok, off to edit everyone's posts.

Closed Circuit for Swan, and very off-topic:

Swan, have you got pictures of your 6x12 somewhere online?
