Allow users to edit - MN C Van - 05-28-2018
I wonder what the point is, if someone wants to change something-
Wrote something about an inverter when i meant charge controller-
Hate to confuse or mislead anyone!
Also, if someone writes something, and later thinks it could be taken another way- being unnecessarily, unintentionally insensitive perhaps-
It would solve a needless problem.
I wonder why here and CRVL don't allow editing.

If you are past the window for self editing, just use the “report” button and the friendly staff will help.

you can edit your post up to 30 minute after you posted
it's there to keep people honest,from making threats or whatever and then just editing them
if the op asked to me to edit or delete i usually do,everyone make grammar errors or says something they regret

IMO it's misguided and counterproductive. The mods can see edits and warn/ban people who misuse those edits. So why do we punish the well-behaved? I know, not my forum. But the editing limitation is one of the main reasons I move complex posts to a blog.
A more productive approach would be to allow edits but encourage people to strikethrough text that needs correcting or is no longer valid.
A truly great approach would be a forum (or plugin) that stored revisions like Wikipedia edits, so folks could see exactly what changed and when.

Just a note here that most of the well oiled forums I'm on do allow for post editing.
While I understand the utility of an edit window, it does prevent people from starting an informative thread in which the first post is continually maintained with info and links to pertinent info further down the thread. If we're to serve the purpose of an informational site---which we could be---allowing post editing on an ongoing basis permits better thread organization.

For example: There could be a thread for ongoing meet-ups. The person starting the thread could continually add and edit times and dates in the first post as people add events in the thread.

Of course. There's no reason not to. I had a forum of young, car dudes and never had a problem.
It was an asset, for the reasons you gave.
But, I'm hearing doubling down so I think it's pretty futile to reason further on this.

it took me a bit but i found where i can change it and turn it off so a user can edit any post they have ever written
in a perfect world i would be fine with it but this world is far from perfect,my worry is a user goes off the rails and edits 500 posts to a picture of a gaping asshole and i have to go back and delete them all
so if anyone want to volunteer to edit the gaping asshole out of 500 post i'll turn it off
it's set to 30 minutes,i can extend it further

Just another opinion here.
Sometimes, some people on a forum, will post something inflammatory, insulting, or demeaning, or just wrong, knowing that in a few days or weeks after it has some members all riled up, the person who posted it can simply remove all or part of the post, and watch the carnage as heated replies seem to come from nowhere. I have seen this happen on some motorcycle forums.
Stirring the pot, with no real accountability. Human nature.
Yes, errors happen, of course. But the OP is always free to ask to have a post edited, or later, they can post the corrections.
Personally, I think the end result of an editing 'window' is the improved flow of courteous respect, and correct information.
Often, when I see some really idiotic question or asinine answer, sometimes my first impulse is to make a snappy remark, but then I think better of it, knowing my post is permanent, (more or less) and could do some harm for a long time.
