Hair clipper hack.
#1
My old 115vAC hair clippers are no more.  Met their demise 6 Months ago.

Fiona and I were going for the feral look.

Needed new.  Saw cordless, saw 14500 battery, assumed 5vDC charging source.

Purchased.

5vDC confirmed.

5vDC is same as USB.
USB ports everywhere.

I cut and spliced wires joining USB connector to barrell connector that fits new Clippers.

Now have hair clippers that can charge  and/or run directly off of USB, instead of having to plug into wall outlet/ inverter.

Screw you inverter.
Screw you, you evil waster of electricity.

Very cool.  Thank you.  I use one to keep my beard trimmed, can you list make and model#, please?

BTW, I would be willing to share my clipper with my cats, but would draw the line at sharing my electric toothbrush . . . Smile
Regards

John

I don't like to make advance plans.  It causes the word PREMEDITATED get thrown around in the courtroom!
I'm NOT crazy!  My mother had me tested! Cool

so does the usb end have a diode, resistor or whatever that steps down the voltage to 5v?

as in to add a usb to my 12v system i just run 12v to the usb and it will step down the voltage to 5v?

A USB source itself either converts 100 to 240vac to 5vDC, or from 12-24vdc to 5vDC, or in some cases from 3.x volts upto 5.0vDC

I have a portable USB source which takes a 18650 battery. It steps up the 3.7v nominal battery voltage to 5.15v for output, and is also charged by a USb source.

USB operates anywhere from 5.25v to 4.75v.

I have one source which maintains 5.15v under a 1 amp load. On a short USB cable to my phone, it charges significantly faster than the other sources which drop to 4.95v under a 1 amp load.

This is for USB 2.0, there is a new USB 3.0 or 3.1 or something which has a much wider voltage range and is capable of delivering more wattage Not familiar with the 3.0+.

Here are the clippers i bought:

There are other clones of these out there. Mine came in a box marked Surker model rfc-688b

There are many capable USB 12-24 USB sources out there. No one needs an inverter to power USB items. It is foolish and electrically wasteful to fire up an inverter, just to have a USB source

That is just the first hit in a search, an example, not a personal product recommendation..

Splicing the usb cable I had to the wire with barrell connector was simple. The USB cable had 4 wires, and is capacble of passing data. Some will only have 2 wires and are only good for charging.

the wires were red black white and green. I determined which wire was the center conductor on the barrell connector , which is the (+) and made sure it was joined to the red. Other wire to black. Solder heatshrink and external stress relief as the USB wires were something like 28 gauge.

The stress relief I used was a Q tip stem electrical taped to bridge the splice.

Here is a well designed and built single 18650 cell charging source whose 18650 cell can be removed.

https://www.amazon.com/ThruNite-C2-Small-Sized-Fast-Charging-Flashlights/dp/B01MPWHSCM/ref=sr_1_1?s=wireless&ie=UTF8&qid=1525893428&sr=1-1&keywords=Thrunight

The 14500 battery in the clippers is 600mAH. The 18650 battery in the above portable USB source is 3400mAH.

That would be more than enough to shave a sheepdog in the middle of nowhere, somewhere where a fur bomb is of no consequence.
