motorcycle as a tow'd

starting to look at older 4 stroke dual sports for old guy trail riding, scouting, runs to town

want no more than 400cc,4 stroke, street legal, light as possible, would like electric start but must have a kick too, most likely manual rear bumper mount, dont want a trailer but a little 5x6 cargo would hold a lot of stuff

klr 250-i have ridden a early 2000 honda 250 and it had just enough, pretty sure i had to go to first up some climbs
anyone have experience with klr250? weight, power, loading it?

what other makes and models should i be looking for, dual sport and enduro bring up a lot of stuff so need to be more specific
sure vintage would be cool but no power or suspension so 1990's and newer

more than i want to spend but sure looks nice

Gary, this would be my number one choice for the specifics you mention.

I have found them used on CL in the $2k range. It's street legal, and capable of highway speeds, but only just.
The Captain and Crew Finally got their stuff together.
Now if they can only remember where they put it.   Rolleyes

Nothing wrong with a KLR 250. I'm going with the TW200 Ballenxj mentioned. It's got electric start, but no kicker. Less power and speed than the KLR. The advantage is that it's great on sand and mud with those big floaty tires. It's also lower than most enduros, so easy on and off and you can flatfoot it when you stop to chat with people. Other bike would be the Yammy XT250 and Suzzy DR250. All great bikes.

Ive got a fair amount of time in the seat of my buddy's TW200 and it's a great bike. Light, fun, and easy to ride. That's the route i'll be going if I ever travel with a bike. Great deals on used ones too.

I actually sold my KLR650 to get the KLR250. The 250 in narrow, lighter and much easier to navigate through trails and what not. My only complaint is that it is a kick start only bike. I rode the 650 for many years daily to and from work. Great bike, just a little top heavy and a bit much to man handle in the woods for me.

I had an XT350. Solid bike, for sure. Thing is, it's relatively tall; once you hit the 350s you start getting into a more MX suspension. The geometry is great for riding and there's lots of travel, but it becomes a little less convenient as a grocery getter. Personally, I'd stick with a 250 or less.

Um...well, 250s are essentially designed for smaller folks. A ladies bike, if you will. So the problem there is if you're a bit of a lard ass like me, they're a bit undersprung. Unless, however, you're sliding or jumping it you'd probably never notice.

Which brings me back to the TW200. It's build for two purposes: bumper thumper and ag bike. They're literally built to make motorcycling easy for RVers and farmers. Lots of rack options here:

Racked up nicely.

Way back in 1999 I had a Dr350 which was a great bike, but hard for me to ride since I am only 5’6”. When I got my KLR650 I has to put on lowering links because it was too much to handle on one foot at stop lights. One of the things I love about the KLR 250 is that I can flat foot at stop lights with the stock suspension.

I like to trail ride a lot and the air cooled engine tended to overhead on my DR350. The KLR’s are water cooled, with a fan, so that is not an issue. The TW200 is a great bike, I have rode a few over the years. If I didn’t already have a KLR250 I would get a TW200 for my Ambo bike.
