I’ll put this here until we have a story time with S1 section. Mic Check Peter Piper picked 3 7 10.
So if you ever come to Cancun for a vacation do understand that the airport taxi mafia scam is the worst I’ve seen in the world. Most of you know I’ve travelled a great deal so this comparative metric kinda says something. Lol. Only in Beirut Lebanon did I pay more for a taxi and that’s when they were shooting at them.
So after getting financially raped by the taxi to take me the seven minute drive to my hotel I decided I was going to go green, my mistake. The next day I set off walking from my hotel up to what I assumed was the bus stop. It looked like every other North American Bus Stop I’ve ever seen, could actually have been a Russian Bus Stop. A little shelter on the side of the road, there were other individuals standing around me and we all waited first thing in the morning for the bus I had no idea where we were going or what I would do. But I figured the bus will go down this long road and from my Google maps the end of this long road was a beach. I asked how much the bus was and my Fellow passenger said free. This should have been my first indication something was rotten in Denmark. I got on the bus with the other Mexican people and thought wow this is kind of fancy more like a luxury travel bus no money was taken and I grabbed a seat.
We travelled through rich jungle and past manicured grounds and pulled into a big hotel, traveling around to the rear. A group of people got off and I thought; “Scott you’ve screwed up, this is not a Public bus.“ I rode it to the end and got off when all the other workers got off. I separated myself from the crowd going behind the bus and made my way through the lush and manicured grounds towards and information map.
Less than two minutes passed before two security types came over to me. They were polite and professional and informed me I was trespassing on the largest, and most expensive resort in Cancun. I explained that I had got on what I thought was a public bus, to find and use an ATM, and ended up here. They politely offered to escort me to the main hotel were I’d be allowed to use the ATM and that they’d call me a cab to leave the property.
I complained about the rip-off level taxi fares and they acknowledged this scam and offered to let me sit and wait for a hour for the next employee bus that would take me back to where I’d got on or the security would negotiate a fare for me. “Where do you want to go?”
“American Mall, I need a local SIM card and usb c charging hub with a Mexican style plug”
“Ok” he said and went over to the taxi rank. There he talked with a lady and she got in her cab and pulled to the front.
“300, it’s a good deal and she will come back for you and bring you back home for the same price.”
I had palmed 100 pesos and shook his hand saying thank you. He was surprised to feel the bill as he was kicking me out of the resort. But I appreciate good security when I see it.
The lady drove me to the mall and gave me her card and told me to call her when I was done confirming the agreed upon price. It was around 10:00am and as I hadn’t been in Mexico for a while I was surprised to find 50% of the shops still closed. They opened at 11!
A short little story to start off the forum. Hopefully a back up can be found that contained all the other ones I penned that the childish &
