AMP ERROR... DOOOOOOOOH!!!
#1
I'd lucked into front row parking.

Rode a couple of Head clearing waves.

Turned on my stereo to overlook ocean and make lunch.

'Lazy Afternoon' by Rebelution come on and I turn up the stereo.

I'd had the loudness turned on for low volume bass, and after the third thump. the stereo goes silent.

Shitballs!

I though the bluetooth connection failed, and try the CD, and it too is silent, but the display shows it is playing a song.

Then the words  AMP ERROR start flashing in the display, and the stereo shuts off.

Since it happened on a Bass thump, I removed the one door 6x9 19 year old kenwood which has been giving me issues, and turn on the stereo and it works.

Whohoo!!

I never before dissected a speaker, but this dirt and crud basically wore through its varnish covering, shorted out the main cone.

But now I need new 6x9's. Ones whose  protective faceplates to not fly off each time the door is closed, so much so That i leave them off,  exposed to salt sand dust and 'other'

Yup. Why are marine grade audio components so damn expensive. The stuff you see bracketed to wake boat roll cages. Is there another nautical term for these tower things? Even the most basic Amps have short protection so most likely no damage done.
Live aboard, means moisture and dead skin cells, aka dust. Both are conductive. Be it a boat or van/trailer.

Glad you caught some distractions. Be well.

19 years old.

Grille design was poor originally.  Little spring loaded tabs fatigued.   Could spend 5 minutes bending them and fitting grille, and the next time the door is closed they go flying.  Grills became handy elsewhere, I eventually just left them off.

Yes shoe goo or duct tape or zip ties, wire, laser welding, butyl tape.....  all these overwhelmingly obvious  and messy solutions for speakers I am now done with, could perhaps have kept the grilles in place, prevented this failure or just pushed it off for a few more years.  The screws to remove speaker from door are behind the grille.  The one speaker has been shredded to inspect it.  it will never work again.

Too late.

I am 6x9 speaker shopping, and whatever replaces these will have grilles/guards with fasteners.  Not some stupid fragile plastic trim ring to 'snap in place' and also retain the grille.

If they last 19 years, I'll be happy.

19 years. They didn’t owe you any more time. Tip a toast to them with a thank you.

Decided to go with CERWIN VEGA XED693 6x9's ....40$ a pair.

Things don't come with grilles.

*Shakes fist at sky, yells at cloud*

Ordered these 20$ speaker grilles.

Not very sexy, but Neither are my doors.

No stupid spring loaded tabs to allow grille to pop off every time I slam door.

There were some cheaper grille options, but they only offered partial protection to the cone.

The Cerwin's are a bit deeper, perhaps they'll sound better than the 19 year old kenwoods did, when the one was not shorted out

Nice three way drivers. I like the grills. Simple and don’t scream steal me, there is an expensive amp in here just follow the wires.

I only have the head unit which claims 50 watts x 4 channels... no additional amplifier.

Not really enough to drive the speakers properly at higher volume, but I can't really turn it up loud anyway with Fiona in the Van.

Amazon had the speakers for 5$ cheaper than Ebay, but I don't have Amazon prime, and it seems they sit on the order for two weeks these days without Prime, and I'm kind of sick of Billionaires, and am seeking to avoid Amazon when possible now.

Ebay orders usually ship the next day, USPS and arrive quickly and one does not have to exceed a certain amount to get the free shipping.
