Do I need a fire resistant container/box for a LiFePO4 battery?
#11
A lot of people try to skip using a bms. Which is tempting. It sits there doing practically nothing. Until a emergency it just monitors the batteries. Solar energy load demands are small compared to electric vehicles so the batteries generally stay closely balanced. Until someday they don’t.
But to address the OP: EV batteries are in a tightly sealed steel container. There can be several reasons for this besides fire protection. Such as :tamper resistant, temperature and moisture control, government regulations, high volatage protection, external bms, huge power, etc.
So why are “drop in replacement” Lithium batteries not in a metal case? These are only 12 volt so come under different safety standards. They have a built in internal bms, internal fuse, small power, plastic case, etc.
