learning to back a tandem trailer
#11
Wink  Hang in there Dean.  It'll get to be 2nd nature with practice.

The first time I backed a short trailer it had a 14ft Ranger bass boat on it . My spotter {hubby} who was supposed to be  watching/teaching me must off dozed off.  Anyways he sure could yell loud when I totally jackknifed the trailer    Huh    If anyone is wondering, yes this is the same Hubby and truck that knocked me off of the boat ramp into Grapevine Lake in March.  It were Cold Water!    Angry    Even though I've towed larger trailers this little Aliner seems to be possessed.

Like Gunny, said just pull forward and start over if you need to.

This little Aliner whups my butt everytime I have to back it into the covered storge where I park it.    I drove around a multi unit storage building twice the last time before I figured out that if I came at it from the other way I could maneuver better without a huge light pole in the way of me getting a straight backwards run at it.  I really think I have more trouble with the shorter trailers than I do with the long ones.

I may need to borrow your idea and find a empty parking lot to practice in Wink

Do you take your pack with you?  Just wondering how they behave thru this process.  Queenie knows when I'm frustrated so starts "checking" me out to see whats wrong & sometimes gets in the way.

My Dad said to hold the bottom of the wheel palm down and turn the way you want the trailer to go. It worked when I was pulling a boat. I put a hitch receiver on the front of the viper truck because if I got the butt end wet enough to get the boat off. I had to make fifty-foot rooster tails to get the truck out of the water. Local PD gave me a hard time so I put a hitch on the front and could drive her in and back up with the power feet try!

Sure helped when I got stuck on a shortcut going to a lake in BC. No place to turn around for 25 miles. Unhooked, "flipped a bitch", and pushed her all the way out.

We had a heck of a time backing our Aliner too. I usually did it so painfully, that after numerous tries, some person with competence would come over and ask me if I needed help. Then they would park it. The nice thing about it was that it was so light that I could move the tongue by hand. But I practiced in parking lots multiple times, but never got the hang of it.

I'm thinking about betting a trailer with two axles. I am afraid that I won't be able to park one, either.

One time I replied to a CL ad that had in the title "pull behind bumper-pull trailer" and was a little smart alecky when I asked him if there had ever been a trailer that wasn't "pull behind". He politely told me about the front hitch trick, so I felt guilty. If it wasn't too much of a hassle to unhook ,etc. that would be the way to go.
