When I see fairly deep cracks in a tire I just wonder how far they go through the sidewall. Also there is degradation from the inside out that cannot be seen.
Overall a person is taking a calculated risk when just considering tread depth. I have heard and seen several blowouts from old tires.
One stands out in my memory. A mid sized suv was towing a larger tent trailer. He passed me on the interstate doing about 75. A few miles later he was on the side of the road, and the tire parts were in the lane. Then later he caught up to me again at a travel stop gas station. (I was driving maybe 60-62). Anyway I commented on him having the blowout, he said he had just bought the trailer (used) and it had sat for a couple years. He did have a couple of spares and he had to switch out both sides.
If he hadn’t been going 75 he might have got away with it.

I’ve driven on 8 yr old severely cracked Michelins and wasn’t comfortable at all with them, and that was a lightweight Honda CRV.
I learned this the hard way.
My very first van, I took it to multiple mechanics, and aside from saying it was a good reliable van (it was not) they all praised the tires. "Really good tires!" They'd spontaneously mention.
Except the tires were 13 years old.
After one freeway blowout and one semi-slow leak that was deemed irreparable (tearing--that should hve been a sign but I knew nothing at the time), I got two tires replaced (I could not afford more--I literally had no money for food and lived off of a few snacks for the last two weeks of that month). The tire place did NOT check or warn me about how old the tires they were replacing were.
As such, I had another freeway blowout.
Yes, I survived two freeway blowouts with no collision. Both times the tire was down to shreds.
It wasn't until the 5th mechanic I took the van to that I was told the date of the tires.
Of course now I know how the check the dates myself! But it was my first vehicle, and with everyone who supposedly knew better than me saying I have really good tires, I didn't realize there was a chance that every single one of them could be wrong.

Welcome to the YARC club.
We may not be right in the Mellon, but we know how to spot a dangerous tire.

When purchasing a used RV that has been sitting, it's always "new tires and battery(ies)".

Mine would come under the rusty might not be bents , but now rust killed and painted white might not be bents.......
I'm having a problem finding all steel valve stems that will fit the 3/8" holes but have a couple of places investigating .
Those are probably just as old as the rims last tires (which I let the scrappers keep)
and not all steel so WILL be replaced with ... whatever but preferably all steel .
Yes , those linked are VERY nice ,,,,and the TPMS option too plz ! Would make the total cost ~ 2K !!
(You're right about the ooooooo ahhhhhhhhhh ers , good chance they might disappear in the wrong neighborhoods too!)
And in case anyone reading is going TPMS ????? Tire Pressure Monitor System
stay tuned

My Aunt's and Uncle's aren't the G159.
These tires failed because they were defective, not age.
Commercial tires are 'all steel' casings-
Meaning they don't have polyester (fabric) in sidewall like everyone here's vehicle does.
Commercial casings are good for hundreds of thousands of miles- multiple caps.

As much as a set of 22.5” commercial tires cost, you would think they would be better engineered. However, my truck uses 22.5”s and I have those fancy Michelin XRV tires that don’t last worth a crap. There is a huge difference between real commercial truck tires and ones made for RV’s. I have began the painfully expensive process of switching to Continental regional bus tires. As I have a few left to swap, I see there is a recall out for the XRV’s...
