Before plugging in any soldering iron or gun, remove the tip from the iron or gun and clean all the oxidation off of it. If you have some Deoxit d5 and some Q tips, try and get it inside the tip's receptacle.
It is rather impresive how much faster it heats up and how much hotter it gets and how much better it works after this treatment. When soldering the duration at which heat is applied should be minimized. While I have a 40 watt weller iron, I pretty much never use it and always use the 140/100 watt gun, and always on the 140 watt setting .
