My conversion van jackknife sofa was not great to sleep on, even after I replaced the foam. When I got the chance to redo my interior I gleefully cut it up into little pieces and put it in the recycling bin.
My new mattress platform is flat with maximum possible storage underneath. I got a 5 inch thick medium firm foam mattress from foamorder.com with the zippered denim cover. Was not cheap, but in the subsequent 13 years has not gotten any softer, and I prefer it to any other mattress I've slept on since. I have taken it into my parents house and laid it on the box spring and put their mattress up against the wall.
Just have to lift it up to allow air circulation underneath. Lately i do that as well as hook the bottom sheet with elastic over the tops of my intake fans. turn them on medium speed or higher and all my bedding levitates and almost feels like freshly washed sheets that night.
Fiona approved.
