Dang I'm about wore out just reading all that much less doing it.
I did learn what I should do, now what I will do is entirely a different matter.
Suffice to say that when I get some solar (100 watt glass panel), I will get an adjustable controller, preferably one with a digital readout, and set the charge voltages like you mentioned. Since there's only so many solar hours per day, and where I live there's usually only 110 (as an average) days a year that are free from clouds/weather, that is an effective limiter for overcharging.
The other thing is to accept that even if I abuse a set of golf carts, getting 2 years (that's pretty low) out of them is like $10 a month total battery cost, which is pretty cheap power. Getting 3-4 years out of them is that much cheaper. There's a point of diminishing returns, I'm not the kind of person who tries to squeeze out every last drop of power or whatever. Just like my last starter battery, it failing the load test was enough for me to change it (that and it was already 6 yrs old).
So thanks for the edumacation, I will try to put at least some of that into effect. Maybe a mod can make that a sticky. Would save the next few schmucks from having to ask the same question.
