Actually the hose (or flex line if you prefer) connects to the brake caliper or wheel cylinder if you still have drum brakes to the steel lines. A friend of mine bought a pickup recently that a bracket that keeps the steel line and hose from flexing was left off by the previous owner and that caused the steel line and hose was able to flex causing the steel line to crack and when he pushed the brake pedal it hit the floor as he was coming to a red light. Luckily nothing bad happened. Sometimes the steel line attaches to the caliper (like on my friend's Tundra) and other times the hose will be attached to the caliper.
