When I see fairly deep cracks in a tire I just wonder how far they go through the sidewall. Also there is degradation from the inside out that cannot be seen.
Overall a person is taking a calculated risk when just considering tread depth. I have heard and seen several blowouts from old tires.
One stands out in my memory. A mid sized suv was towing a larger tent trailer. He passed me on the interstate doing about 75. A few miles later he was on the side of the road, and the tire parts were in the lane. Then later he caught up to me again at a travel stop gas station. (I was driving maybe 60-62). Anyway I commented on him having the blowout, he said he had just bought the trailer (used) and it had sat for a couple years. He did have a couple of spares and he had to switch out both sides.
If he hadn’t been going 75 he might have got away with it.
