I wrote it with that intention. So thank you. It is the way it went down but at the time I failed to get the emotive part. I missed that it I just felt sorry for my Uncles, and a little angry that I seemed to be selfish for not having challenges to step up to. I knew I could step up if asked or at least I thought I could. It wasn't my fault we didn't have a war to fight. I thought, at the time, my Dad was suggesting I was weak because I was going to school and had time to play with cars.
Boy was I wrong.
I did step up. Later in life and only then did I understand what he was wanting me to learn so many years earlier. Be thankful you can be aware of the small stuff that is bugging you. Worrying about what happens when you run out of rounds is part of the big stuff items and the rest is just little shit.
All about perspective.
I had chiggers in Africa. My baby toes will never be the same. Never noticed till I came out of the jungle and into an embassy. It just didn't reach high enough on the scale of things I had to pay attention to. Just as my uncles probably didn't feel the heavy awkward packs they carried onto the beach so many years before. So when your problems are many think about them within the perspective of in 20 years will anyone remember, or care. It's been twenty years for me. I get blisters on my little toes as they are now deformed and don't sit right in the shoe. But, I never notice as the feeling is gone from both of them. I care, I still send money to agencies and selfless people who work to help. It isn't glamorous, it doesn't make the news, but it is a bad day for many. But compared with first world problems? First world problems; "It don't mean nothing."
Don't be like me so many years ago when my father showed me those tapes. It is ok to be born in the first world. It is ok to be lucky. It is a privilege to not have to fight for real survival. But it also wise to have perspective.
Don't know what a chigger is?
Very graphic. Weak stomachs should not view. Nasty little burrowing fleas that come out of the dirt. You don't have to be a dirty villager to get them either. This white boy got them and I showered every day. Even on days I didn't have time to shave.
