Any Knowledge About Freeze Dried Foods
#11
We have about 30 MREs, they are not tasty, but we have them.
As far as dehydrated foods go; your best bet is to look into buying a dehydrator and making them Smile

I made a dehydrator
I had a fold up clothes dryer rack place under ceiling fan or other fan - circulation is needed.
I put cookie sheets on the dryer rack rods. Some of my cookie sheets have a lip on one end - keeps them from sliding off - fit perfectly.
For some things I use plastic sheets from the craft department used for some kind of needle point.
Put chopped food on the needle point plastic or puréed food on the cookie sheets covered with plastic wrap to make leather.
Then I put a halogen light under the whole thing. Then I wrap some cloth around the whole mess - keep cloth away from halogen light.
You can also do it on a nice warm dry day - use your car... vent it - stuff drys... keep dust off food
Needs low heat, ventilation dust & bug cover plus time
I'm not lost. I'm exploring.

I've actually eaten quite a few of them. They have all sorts of entree's, but I'll list a few likes and dislikes.
Chili Mac? Yes.
Roast Beef? yes.
Pesto chicken? No!
Veggie Omelette? Maybe.
Tuna? OK, but I prefer to buy my own cans of it.
The shakes are OK, I like strawberry.
Pound cake is one of the sought after deserts.
Cherry pie? Not bad.
M&M's? Yup.
You don't like the taste? There's a reason for the Tabasco sauce in the condiment packages.
The heaters are interesting. Mostly they work well, but sometimes you get a dud.
I would bet if you were hungry enough, you'd scarf one down with no complaints.
The Captain and Crew Finally got their stuff together.
Now if they can only remember where they put it.   Rolleyes

So will this become part of one "cooking" thread and "cooking" covers everything to do with food?  So that is where recipes and anthing food related goes? I guess I better go take a look

Well that's a relief. Smile   I went to visit "cooking".  All I could picture about moving my query about Freeze Dried Food was a great long thread that I'd have to search thru to find what I was looking for. Huh

There are lots of instant dried foods in every grocery store, but you have to look for them. They’re cheaper than foods specifically aimed at campers or preppers.

My absolute favorite: BetterThanBouillon paste. Comes in 10 varieties, 8 and 16oz jars (I buy two or three large Organic Chicken Low-Salt type at a time -- $6 ea. at Costco).
· Plain chicken broth for hot drink: 1 tsp BTB + 8 oz of water (20 calories).
· Large bowl of chicken noodle soup: 2 tsp BTB + 2 cups water + <1/2 cup canned or other cooked chicken meat + 1 block Ramen noodles (discard high-salt season pack that comes w/it).
· Also make gravy with it, same ratio, add your own seasonings
McCormick Chicken Gravy mix pkt ($1 at Walmart). Mix 1 packet with 1 cup tepid water.
Add ~ ½ cup canned or cooked chicken meat, some vegetables = stew.

* Quinoa? There are instant kinds.
* Couscous – almost all of it is instant
* Instant rice – add to something with gravy
* Spam – mix with rice, pineapple, etc
* Canned meats, or pressure can your own in pint jars
* Idahoan instant potatoes – plain and flavors
* Quick oatmeal cooked with milk or water. Flavored instant packets.
* Flour tortillas for quesadillas, just add the ingredients you like
* Salami, summer sausage, or other cured meats, preserved meats that don’t without refrigeration. Follow the manufacturer's recommended handling and storage, but it’s said been said that it lasts longer without refrigeration than they indicate. Use w/flour tortillas, cheese, beans, etc.
* Sun-dried tomatoes (not in oil) can be added to anything.
* Tuna – too many uses to name
* Powdered milk – for cooking if you’re not crazy about the taste as a drink.
* Jerky
* Grits if you like them
* Bisquick for pancakes, drop biscuits, savory pies, etc
* Granola bars
* Dried spices can make a lot of difference
* Small onions, shallots, garlic don’t need refrigeration
* Dried fruit where they sell bulk foods, plus packaged raisins and cranberries.
* Hard cheeses if the weather isn’t too hot if you don’t have refrigeration.
* I’ve heard that Asian markets have a lot of useful dried foods, and cheaper butane canisters, too.
* I've heard that Mountain House Chicken Teriyaki is really good.
* My sister says there’s a powdered hummus, but beans on crackers do nothing for me
* Check out all of the food aisles for the quick preparation stuff that may fit your taste. But one and test it, write it down if you like it. Maintain a shopping list of stuff you might want to get.
