The heat removed from the fridge interior, has to be vented to the atmosphere through the condenser. The condenser is the tubes and fins on the back of an older school fridge, The condenser on my fridge looks like a tiny car radiator, with a fan attached to it.

The Skin convected residential fridges use the metal skin of the fridge exterior body, to release the heat to the atmosphere, and covering this portion of the fridge inhibiting airflow reduces the efficiency of that heat transfer, increasing the time the fridge compressor has to run, to remove the same amount of hest from the goodies inside of the fridge, and increasing electrical consumption, to some degree.

So one should determine where the skin convection/ condenser coils of the dorm/ ressy fridge resides on the fridge body and not obstruct airflow from this area, and be sure nothing can puncture this area.
