sour cream powder
#1
Here's my latest food experiment: Hoosier Hill sour cream powder

Last winter, when I started prepping for van life, Amazon had a sale on "ReadyMeal" retort meals, so I had bought a lot. Frankly, they've all been "meh", so I decided to buy something to pump 'em up. Smile

Here's a "Santa Fe style steak" pouch beside the sour cream container:

It definitely improved the taste, and added a bit of protein & calcium. Smile
As some of the Amazon reviews mention, there was a moderately odd after taste, but I did not find it bad.
It was easy to prepare just one serving worth, so is ideal for non-refrigerator folks.

It costs about $14 for a pound at Amazon (around $12 if bought as part of a 5 item subscribe & save order).
There were cheaper options, but I like the square space optimizing container, and had wanted to try a Hoosier Hill product.

In a few days, I'll take another picture beside a better scale item and showing the "Nutrition Facts" label.

Even having a fridge it is hard to keep sour cream long enough to use it. I think that I will give this a try. Thanks

Thanks Jim! That makes me feel better about the decision to start without a fridge (mainly to avoid the Noise & power load). If even the DeathStar has difficulty keeping some items, then a more modest setup definitely would. Smile

The above is confusing (even to me, the author). :\
I meant that if Jim's setup is suboptimal for some refrigerated items, that makes me feel much more confident in my decision to start without a refrigerator.
One less nagging issue.
Thanks Jim! Smile

I'm using up some MRE polytrays (i.e. military "squad" level long-life (3+ years) mylar-sealed trays that typically have about six pounds of food), and I mistakenly opened a breakfast-y "Pork Sausage in Cream Gravy" (was pork crumbles, not links). I'm "ok" with a single portion of that, but eighteen portions was not something I wanted to consume. Sad

After racking my brains, I decided to rinse off the "white sauce", and use it as regular sausage crumbles, added to sundry dishes (eggs, mac&cheese, a new Knorr's pasta side).

Last weekend, while working on my storage unit, I came across a recent can of "diced tomatoes", and suddenly thought... Tacos! Smile
Bought some taco shells and lettuce, and already had some shredded taco cheese.

It really let me stress test the sour cream powder...

Taco shell with pork crumbles & cheese, nuked, then added some diced tomatoes:

After adding lettuce and "fresh" sour cream:

I ate one to two meals of those each day for five days, with zero appetite fatigue, and after tweaking the ratios, really enjoyed it. Smile

It was messy, but definitely something I'd consider as a treat for the future, albeit with a much smaller quantity of pork crumbles. Smile

I have four MRE polytrays of "Cream Gravy with Ground Beef", and am now no longer afraid of them.
If the first goes well, I'm open to bringing one down to Arizona, for potlucks. Smile

There's still about 80% of the SC powder left. I'm no longer measuring the powder (which is too fiddly), and instead just dump some powder in a cup, eyeball it, add some water, and mix. It still tastes a bit "odd", but I'm used to that, now.
