I need a laptop, need advise.

Shadow, do you touch type?
If yes, try them both out.
Even for "light" usage, I personally prefer having full navigation keys (including: Home, End, PageUp, PageDown).

In terms of usability, screen size and keyboard layout are the two biggies.
Bigger screen size often is paired with fuller keyboards.

Blanch nailed it on software/etc. Smile
If you're not doing anything esoteric, most laptops will more than suit you. Smile

The only other major option is a CD/DVD player/writer.
If you watch DVDs, it's handy to have an all-in-one entertainment device.

If you're thinking about going smaller..(10"?)..I'd prefer a unit that charges from USB (like a phone) .
The micro processor in these devices just sips the battery....EX: I have an ASUS Transformer and really like the versatility over my clunky big 17.5" laptop.
(Charging it is SO much more convenient vvith USB . I rarely use the big one except for production tasks , or videos )

And I agree on the girl's advice , your usage doesn't pose a big load on your machine. Most any one could fit your needs.
The Chrome Books are an inexpensive option that fits your needs too.
(I heard that google is merging Chrome and Android operating systems. So could be "easy" like a phone .......no experience yet on that to confirm this though. )
Many Mfg's build these.
stay tuned

How does it compare to the Dell?
Lenovo is an IBM computer.  I have one and I don't find it much different than the Dell I use to have. The Lenovo I currently own is to run my work applications.  Work and Surf maybe should be the 'name' of my Lenovo.  Shy
Ebay, Amazon, Youtube, will all work on it.  I find Microsoft is as invasive as Google when you own a PC.  Open source programs are my goto for add on's.  Firefox, Open Office, Open Shot all good programs.  Then I added Avast for virus and spy protection.

Lenovo WAS an IBM brand. It was sold years ago to a Chinese company. The company has generally kept up the standards.

Do any of the above recommendations change when you do a lot of writing and info-gathering? Or do you just regularly move it to thumb drives and continue?

I've touch-typed for 50 years, and can't live without it.

Get an old Mac. My daughter has an old Mac she brought in 2000. Still runs, still runs the newest version of iOS and still has real support. When you call Apple with a problem...real people answer, and they know their stuff...you always get a fix.

A load of deals on older macs as the mac addicts always want the latest and greatest. Built-in software for most things and generally not have to worry about viruses.

Usual point click simplicity but not without it's hiccups at times
