That's too bad. Automatics are bound to fail sooner or later
There's videos on Youtube of pro's rebuilding transmissions-
they'll go through each step- It's really not that hard. (after you get it out)
When I was a kid I did several, and lately Dodge and Jeep needed it.
(like I said, they fail sooner or later)
Someone nearby could help lift it out, probably for beer
For $1900 I'd sure be exploring alternatives!!

I just came from a routine cleaning today. A bridge I had put in back in 03 - paid for by my dental insurance - is failing and needs to be replaced, and now it's going to cost ME several thousand dollars, so I'm in the same boat you are. Freedom day is going to have to be pushed back another 4 months or so . . .
Hang in there, Belinda. This too shall pass.

WOW! Now I'm bummed for both of you. The wise philosopher I heard said; If it aint one thing, it's three.
I'm not even going to mention my ongoing fiasco with insurance.
I hope you both get through this soon.

Now if they can only remember where they put it.

Thanks, guys!! I tend to have mini pity parties right before I spring in to action! I'm attending a resort wedding this weekend so I plan to use their alcohol to drown my sorrows. Maybe after that I'll figure something out.
As for the transmission, Gary, yes the van was acting weird before the seal failed. We were just hoping that was the only issue. A week before that, it started idling high and didn't fall after warming up and I mentioned the overdrive issue about a month or so ago. It has shifted smoothly all that time, but after the seal repair it was shifting very hard between park and reverse and had a huge clunking noise when put in drive causing something to spin super duper fast. They fixed that issue and then lowered the idle, so now it moves in first and second gears but not in drive. As you can tell by my technical terms, I don't know much about it! The neighbor is not a transmission guy, so he was only willing to fix the seal to save me labor costs.

who are "they" that fixed the issue?
changing the seal in no way will affect the performance of the transmission
there are 2 key things to do when installing a trans, make sure the torque converter is full of fluid and make darn sure the converter is engaged to the pump
i dont think it was installed correctly
now choices,if it's a relatively low mile trans you can go for a fix, if it's pre electronic it's only two systems,a mechanical and a hydraulic, the hydraulic is the brain(shifting),the mechanical is the brawn ,so if your mechanical,bearings/gears/clutches are good you can fix the hydraulic, torque converter, pump, valve body, thats where your problem is,if it's high miles, forget about it
a used transmission, find a low miles used one with a short warranty, can be found at wrecking/salvage yards
craigslist crapshoot
full rebuild with reputable shop with warranty
i would have a pro on that type of trans look at it,tell him everything, well unless it has 180,000 on it,then it's time

is that $1900 just for the trans or installation to?

The van has 76,000 miles on it. The $1900 includes labor for a rebuild. The transmission is an AOD or something? It has a sensor so I'm guessing it's obd1. The check engine light came on the day the seal failed but not before that. I do have other options to consider but they all include shops!! I also have to figure out how to get her to a shop! Towing around here is crazy expensive! None of it matters until I have cash in hand anyway, so drinking will come first.

A junkyard transmission is basically a crapshoot, at best. Plus, I'm not sure you could adapt a more modern tranny to work ok in a 93, and I wouldn't expect to find any 93s still sitting in a junkyard, they probably all went to the crusher long ago.
As for going to Algadones, yes, it's crossed my mind. But the plan is to buy an Alaskan Camper and put it on the back of my pickup truck. There's a backlog on them, if I order one now, it will be ready for me in May. So right now I'd have to fly out to AZ and either rent a van or live in a motel. I'm still assessing my options, but at worst, this is merely going to delay me by about four months or so, I'd get the camper in September instead of May. Either way, I'm still out of the Northeast before the snow falls next winter.
