Isn't Avast antivirus free anymore?
#1
I've just been on the phone with Avast for nearly 45 minutes.

Last month, I dropped Norton and signed up for the Avast antivirus ($26) -- I thought -- but this past week I've been getting warnings that it was expiring.

When I called, they said that I had signed up for some kind of clean-up service, not the antivirus, and it was good for a year, and she didn't know why it would be expiring, since it said it was good until Jan, 2019.  The woman in India with the heavy accent said she would do the free exam of my computer.  I had cleaned out Norton as best I could, but she said that it was still there and needed to be removed with their 'special' equipment, for $80.  I said I couldn't afford that, which she seemed to have trouble understanding.

She passed me on to her supervisor, who repeated the same offer for $80.  He couldn't seem to understand why an American couldn't afford $80, and then more for the premium antivirus.  I said it was going to have to stay slow, and I would go with the free Avast antivirus.  Well, it's only for 30 days, now.  And he said the free Avast probably wouldn't work due to the conflict with the existing Norton.

Does anyone have any ideas on how I can get a free/very cheap antivirus, Avast or other?

Norton's is very invasive. Once you have installed it, you can never really remove all of it without reformatting your hard drive, then reinstalling the operating system along with anything else you want on there. I will never use Norton's again. It has been said that Norton's is just another type of virus, and I tend to agree. No Norton's, Thank You.

Yeah, I found out the hard way. And it slows down the computer TREMENDOUSLY.

And in my experience, Norton's customer support was non existent. I ended up reformatting and reinstalling everything and swore them off.
This was over 10 years ago. Sad that they were too big to acknowledge the little guy, but the ripples of discontent have spread all over the net now, and that's gonna bite them back.

Computers, designed to raise your blood pressure.

Download and install the free version of Ccleaner.

Open it.  Click on "Registry" (second icon on right) and follow the prompts.  This should clean out Norton.
Download the free version of ZoneAlarm Anti-virus and firewall.

I run Win7, so I can't guarantee this will work with any other OS.

Your experience with Avast is BS! I'd try asking for a refund ??

Norton actually has a removal tool ,
 http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/norton_removal_tool.html
I have used this to remove Norton from many new computers that came with Norton. It worked for me !

I've been using Windows Essentials/Defender and Malwarebytes for several years on my Vista , W7 and W10.

Practice "Safe Clicks" as posted above^.

Avast Antivirus is pretty tenacious too . I did a bunch of tests of different Antivirus Programs when I had my Vista.
I had to do a reset to earlier state to get rid of it completely.
Here's the Avast Removal Tool

Good luck
