In the past when my Mobley adapter failed or I simply was too lazy to find it I would put the sim in my Freedompop hotspot and use it like that. I tried that yesterday and it came up PIN locked, so I had to find the adapter and get it plugged in for use in the trailer. I haven't had it out of the truck in months because I could use the other hotspots. It worked well even if I was eating or in a store as long as I was using a android phone. My iPhone doesn't seem to have the same range to pick up the signal.

I've never tried moving the sim out of the Mobley. I leave the USB adapter plugged into it all the time. In the van I plug it into a USB outlet and if I need to take it with me I use a rechargeable USB pack to power it. It is a little ungainly this way but better than nothing. I guess if worse came to worse I could always plug it into my OBD port.
