Putts putts in Putt. (pic heavy)
#1
I reckon it's prolly as good a time as any to start my thread of journeys in Putt.

Last week I was playing dominoes with Paul down at the Crystal and I mentioned to him that with Putt so ready I was getting itchy feet to get out of town for a weekend camp. He said, "Wanna get drunk in Butte this weekend?" I scoffed. Then he mentioned St. Patty's day. Oh shit, perfect, I'm in.

St. Patrick's Day...I'm not Irish, and I already know how to drink at will, so it's never been a big thing for me. But a mere 82 miles from Bozeman is the mining town of Butte, Montana. Hell of a lot of Guinness got sweated out digging that big damned hole.  In Butte, they say they're Ireland's Fifth Province---bet there's been a lot of brawls with folks from some parts of Boston over who's more Irish. St. Patty's day in Butte is legend. Green wearing, vomit stinking, gutter crawling, legend.

I scouted Google maps for a spot.

Four blocks from the downtown mayhem in a very quiet side street, at the end of East Granite with my right side overlooking the Broadway MiniStorage and the entire Butte Valley and surrounding mountains. Arrived Friday night. The. View. Was. Spectacular.

I knew it was going to be cold so before I left I bought a Wave3 propane catalytic heater. Took the edge off the chill but I could still see my breath.

Paul just hunkered down in his rig. Said he slept warm but he sure as hell made a bee line for Putt then next morning.

I knew exactly what he would be looking for.

The parade started at noon, so we figured we had a few hours to burn before we started walking to find our spot to watch the parade.

Putt has now officially been christened by its first domino session.

Man, a great view, my best buddy, my dog, in my home on wheels...that felt great.

We kept hearing more cars than we expected, though. We were parked with my window away from the street, so we couldn't see much.

Eventually I decided it was time for peek outside to see what was going on.

Wut the...

Turns out my boondocking spot recon skills were so good I found the exact street the City of Butte felt would always be empty and close to downtown making the perfect spot to stage the start of a parade.

Over the next two hours the parade came to us.

It's a lion on the Lion's Club float. We had to ask...I think they were drunk when they built it.

Dart got a LOT of attention.

They started moving around 12:20. We followed along.

Fun fact, the horses always go last.

Then for a little meander downtown...they actually call it uptown in Butte because it's at the top-ish of a hill.

Gawd, they were loud.

Bummer, didn't take many pix.

We wandered around for a an hour and a bit, then we went back to base camp---now deserted and quiet---for a nap before the evening's festivities.

Here's a couple pix of where I parked Putt.

We had a little nap. Lovely. I don't nap very often but I do find I can do it in Putt.

Dart was exhausted from the walk. Every little girl---and some big ones too---just had to give him a rub, so after the nap when Paul and I decided to head back into the throngs, Dart was clearly un interested in moving. I think that was a first.

Paul and I are experienced in these sorts of things; we knew we'd never get a drink in one of the bars; we shipped off with flasks and beers in pocket.

Here we go...

Another well prepared individual.

It just got blurrier and blurrier...

Just imagine a bunch of green people yelling and singing.

Paul and I did manage to get back to our vehicles...somehow.

It snowed overnight and was snowing lightly in the morning, the drive back was a bit sketchy over the pass. We waited 'til about 11AM and the road was just wet but not icy.

I did manage to make the first of many, I hope, contributions to my sticker wall decor.

Just to clarify: the top right eye in the pyramid is Paul's sticker he puts on the front all his bikes, and I now put on mine, to signify the Universe looking out for you, not the Illuminati or anything popularly symbolic. So it's first on the sticker wall. I like the Universe looking after me. The top one is my cheap little Putt sticker to give to random folks; I'm going to do a bigger, badder one for my good friends...guess you'll know now which one you are. The MT is, of course, where Putt was born. And, now added, my Butte St. Patty's Day sticker.

And so putts in Putt begins.
