I'm a linux fan as well, but most of my authors demand Word for their manuscript edits and without W.I.N.E., it's a nightmare... wait, I mean with... either way... I gave up and became a Windoze Uzer.

Have you tried OpenOffice?  You can save all your documents out in pretty much any format including .doc files.  I use it instead of Microsoft Office.
