In the NCO hootch where my bunk was when in An Hoa someone had written in glow in the dark paint, " JJ is so Fing fine" Someone had an old TEAC reel to reel and virtually hours of any kind of music you could think of. It was all good. I cut a small window in my area so as not to get the contact high since one or five of them smoked.....a lot. Through it all they had the reputation as the best firing battery in 2/11, our Battalion. Sitting talking to my friends and listening to Janis or Jimi and talking of home, I could tell a million stories but mostly just BS about going home and our futures.
Short story; All of our fire missions had to go through Bn and be assigned to a battery. All the batteries monitored my frequency so one day I call in a "Contact, Rules of Engagement" fire mission. That means we need rounds fast and all air traffic is warned but firing didn't wait for air to clear. I called in the coordinates and what I needed to adjust with. In about 60 seconds I hear a guy with a midwest twang (my best friend) say"shot" meaning my round was in the air. Battalion went apeshit.
1st round was good and I went into "fire for effect", all guns going. That's one of many reasons Steve is my best friend.
I guess you had to be there.
