It helps. I can visualize what I want but to make sure everything fits like it is supposed to I like to draw it. I'm more comfortable with a cad program than with paper and a pencil. Grid paper helps a lot but the accuracy of cad can't be matched with any manual drawing. Of course it all hangs on how good you can use a tape measure.
