Got a weird one - GypsyDogs - 06-02-2023 I have noticed that not only does my speedometer not read accurately (replaced sensor at transmission- no joy) It also reads differently based on ambient temperature. Colder= less accurate. Warmer= more accurate Neither is correct.. but when it is hotter outside.. it is closer to my actual speed…. ((Shrug)) Weird- hhuh? RE: Got a weird one - Texjbird - 06-02-2023 The speedometer on my 1998 Safari usually shows a speed that is 15 mi faster than what we're actually going. I finally adjusted to this discrepancy to my actual speed. It still startles me when I look down and my speedometers clocking us at 100 miles an hour
RE: Got a weird one - rvpopeye - 06-02-2023 Bizarro World ? TJB 85mph might be a bit extreme in that old Safari .. RE: Got a weird one - GypsyDogs - 06-02-2023 Mine is a proportional discrepancy.. at lower speeds it reads almost correctly.. but as I go faster, the difference is more noticeable.. Almost like a percentage of error.. and also the percentage is affected by ambient temp RE: Got a weird one - Wayne49 - 06-02-2023 My 1989 Ford E350 Class C has the proportional increase issue. Temperature would affect mechanical components such as clock springs. Didn't know about it until California was resurfacing CA-127 South from the Nevada line with a 55 mph limit in the construction zone, usually 65 mph. I was doing 55 mph, according to my speedometer, but the warning sign was flashing my speed as 58 mph, I was the only vehicle on the road at that time. I turned my phone's GPS on and used a GPS speedometer app to check the differences at 25, 35, and 45, at 25 it was minimal, increasing as the indicated speed went up. I don't drive over 55 anyway. RE: Got a weird one - sternwake - 06-02-2023 You dont have any strong magnets in vincinity of speedo do you? One x country journey west to east, in Louisiana, I-10, maybe I-12, late at night, my speedo needle started bouncing from a steady 65mph, at one point ranging from 45 to 80mph. I was like "great, my speedo cable is about to snap" Fiona awoke from her perch on reverse facing seat armrests, and started barking whining, tail wagging, like a person was sitting in my back seat. 15 miles later the speedo needle and Fiona were calm, steady. 3 more cross country trips since, maybe 5, and it has not reoccurred. No idea other than a bizarre magnetic anomaly. RE: Got a weird one - GypsyDogs - 06-02-2023 No Stern, no magnets of any significance nearby My discrepancy is a bit more than that, Wayne At 60 deg.. (These are all ish) 20=25 30=45 40=60. At 80 deg .. 20=22 30=35 40=50 I am having to rely on a speedo app RE: Got a weird one - rvpopeye - 06-03-2023 Does anyone actually obey the speed limits these days ? No proof available uptah camp. If you're not passing everything in sight , probably OK. RE: Got a weird one - GypsyDogs - 06-03-2023 I hate tickets… RE: Got a weird one - GotSmart - 06-03-2023 I remember disconnecting the cable and cleaning up everything on several different vehicles. Most of the time it repaired the problem. Once I had to change a gear at the transmission. |
