If you can , you should.
State DMV , BMV etc. are generally easy to find online .
Shop insurance co.'s , policies vary or not available at all depending on who you ask

I was told that to insure an RV…or anything which you want to claim as an RV…it must have the metal identification which is welded into the drivers side door frame. It is the name of the manufacture and their industry Id number. Without that, insurance companies will not insure it as an RV.

This is really hitting the schoolie community. Many of those are thousands upon thousands of dollars into the build…and yet they cannot get insurance. I have been caught up in this too. I cannot get insurance for my custom build ford RV. No ID tag on the door frame.

I've heard some did that .

I'm wondering if that's ALL insurance companies though?

1. Drive defensively every mile. As in "Hill Street Blues (TV)", "Let's be careful out there".

2. Don't put any more dollars into a project than you can afford to lose. "Live within your means."

3. If possible, be your own "comprehensive and collision" insurer by maintaining an account with cash value sufficient to replace/repair damage.

So I've been doing research on all this stuff... There's a new(ish) insurance company called Roamly that will insure campervans and contents. It spawned off of Outdoorsy apparently. Do your own research, etc etc.

You do have to save all your receipts from the build.

I had no problem with my insurance company. They just asked me a couple questions and now I am insured as a ‘motorhome’.
And no.. it isn’t some weird little company.. it is Progressive. They are also one of the companies that covers full-time/live-aboard and ‘daily driver’ rigs.

I used Progressive with the RV. I'd like to use them again with a (future) van. I'll try them first.

Makes dollar sense, when there is a sufficient customer base over which to spread risk, insurance corporations would respond.

It's a numbers game to them. Collect more premiums, spread the risk, make a few payouts, and profit.

That is the goal of all business.. profit.
Otherwise it would be charity.. lol

I had progressive…they stopped insuring my rig for more than the Kelley blue book.  Meaning, all the renovation and upgrades were not insured.

I checked with dozens of insurers,  none were insuring renovation and upgrades.

The book value of a 1989 e350 is $2,700.  This doesn’t even cover the cost of the new battery.
