Powdered milk - Motrukdriver - 08-02-2018

Anyone use powdered milk instead of hauling around milk that needs refrigerated?  This one gets really good reviews.

Mac and cheese or a bowl of cereal.. I wonder if you can really taste a lot of difference?

Some times but I have also used powdered coconut milk.

I use powdered milk. I got tired of always throwing out milk. There is something called shelf stable milk, but I have never tried it. I saw it at the dollar store.

I've used several types of dehydrated milk, including Nido.

Nido has fat (it's "whole milk"), which means it appeals to a wider audience.
The downside is its unopened shelf life is much less than fatless powdered (about a year (or less?) vs a claimed life up to 20 years).
Walmart carries a #2 sized can of Nido, which is a great size & price point for trying it. Smile

+1 to Blanch & Gary's points!
My usage varies a lot, and I can literally make up a single glass, with no worries about refrigeration.

A lot of internet whiners complain about the difficulty of mixing it, however I experimented & found a simple technique:
  • use a nalgene style wide mouth bottle
  • put in about a quarter of the water you will be using, and add the powder
  • do an initial quick/brief stir
  • add the rest of the water
  • shake it vigorously
That's a lot easier and more effective than 100% stirring (think James Bond: shaken, not stirred!).
That works with room temp water. Smile

I have used dollar store ss-milk, specifically for cereal, and it was fine, however it does need refrigeration. It does get bonus points for being ready-to-use and square (more efficient space wise).

Box milk is popular in Australia and when I was in Europe it was the "in" thing. Only thing is you have to refrigerate it once it is opened of course. The solution would be to buy it in the smallest packages you can find but it might end up costing more per unit than larger packages. When I was little I thought all milk came from a can of powder. Wasn't until I was more growed up that I figured out we was poor folk and couldn't afford store milk. Didn't know anyone that had a cow or that might have expanded my knowledge base earlier.

OK Mo. Chocolate milk does not come from brown cows. Black and white cows don’t produce vanilla milk. If there are not four teats under it, it is a bull and they are not good to try to milk.

Powdered milk? Powdered eggs? What next? A thread about powdered babies?

That baby powder sure smells nice.

As well as a "LOL" button, we need a "Blame" button.
Blanch's post is an excellent example of a use case for it. Wink

Blanch, how about a "mac & cheese" thread?
Both you and Mo have mentioned it recently, and I've got pics of my two favorite recipes, one heinously/chemically decadent and one virtuously delicious. Smile
Both easy, with minimal ingredients.

For now, here's some pics of the small can of Nido I tried...

beside a 12 ounce soda can, to demonstrate the size of #2 cans:

freshly opened, no wasted space!:

I plan to buy another can, as soon as I've used up my backlog of 20-year #2 cans.
