Rock hounding. - Cammalu - 03-21-2022

The metal detecting does sound like fun but it would be really hard for me. I do have a couple detectors but have never used them. I can rock hunt from the puttputt. Maybe I can metal detect from there too but sure would be a challenge.

Yeah Tx. They do look like they are from Mars! I can’t wait to get back the small ones that are being cut.

so what do ya do with them big rocks LOL

I remember the Long Long Trailer as Lucy collected her 'rocks'....omg I can see ya Camm with your rocks in your Class A

too funny

I got 2 fab detectors. Underwater ones. Which I love but thinking of selling both and going a grade higher. There are cream of the crop detectors out there I couldn't afford them but I sure as hell can now.....so....hmm, before hitting the road full on I might dump these too very good ones and buy 1 great one Smile we shall see

I don’t know what we will do with the big ones. I wanted to break them in half for portability if nothing else but John is resistant. The two big ones we can’t even lift. I’d like to make slabs out of one about an inch or two thick. They would be big enough for a side table. A saw big enough is a whole nuther problem though.

I can only think of one place off hand that would be able to do it and that’s up near the petrified forest. They have big slabs of the trees so someone is cutting.

A big bowl or two would be cool. In any event we won’t be traveling with them. They’ll be in KY.

wow into tables and bowls...that is impressive. I did not know you were 'rock' working to that level but I know one thing, the beauty of that when done would be amazing! that is worth the hard work for change of course as any artist would love to attempt.........me, nope. ain't got it in but super cool,
didn't know you guys took it to that level. love it.

Bwahahaha. I’ve never done anything like that before but then again I have always been one to try anything. I never even considered that I might not be able to do it or what it would take. Something is wrong with my brain and I guess it always has been. I never think I can’t.

well ya ain't right, now are ya HAHA

I think tho big rock work to that level you gotta have one of those water cutting diamond saw things?
I've seen people work with smaller stones like into jewelry and stuff but never watched anyone make bigger items and such but I bet once cut into the patterns inside those stones are so pretty. I don't have patience for any crafts or hobbies, only was my horses and my metal detecting. Biking and hiking and kayaking. I need to move ya know....I have to go go go in a way and keep the feet and body moving, if I was one to do stone work or build something in my garage I would go batty or sit over a table doing fancy needlework so I just never went toward that crafty arty stuff. I can paint and draw well but again, never held it cause I have to stand there with my easel and omg, it drove me batty just staying in one spot.

yea I ain't right either HAHA

About a month ago I was at the flea market and saw a table full of rocks.  Of course I had to take a look.

In the middle of the usual commercial generic geodes, fossils and minerals were two septarian nodules. Also known as dragon eggs.

The guy obviously had not made a sale in days, as his price went from $350 for one to $110 for both. This was a new one for me as I had been looking at the rock displays for years and had never seen one.  The smaller one is 7 x 9 inches and the larger one is about 8 x 11.

I brought them to the rock club last week and everything stopped so they could look. Today they go in to be sliced. I’ll post pictures when I can.

That is the outside of the Dragons Eggs

The people at the rock club are unsure about being able to cut those. I found one person that many of the vendors use but he is wanting almost as much as I paid for the rocks to slice them.

It’s only money.

Here are some pictures of the Moroccan Jasper I have had sliced this year. For some reason I am able to find forgotten stashes that dealers have set aside.

Success!

After searching the vendors, and asking around town, I found the person that knew what to do and was still doing it.

I found the one man that would cut my dragons eggs.

Now I need to polish them.
