Engine stops running after a few minutes
#1
Help.......I’ve been stranded for 3 days in Cashmere waiting to order parts and fix the G30. A kind person is letting me park in front and being moral support. The engine will start when it’s cold and run for 5-10 minutes then stop. It will not start again for a hour or two. Ive checked a bunch of possible causes and replaced the cap, rotor, & ignition pickup coil but none have fixed it. I could not see any spark or fuel spraying so assumed it was electrical no spark/no fuel issue. Someone said the fuel pump can be running but not pumping or the pump relay epoxy gets brittle and cracks and doesn’t relay power properly?? So I was thinking of buying a fuel pump pressure tester and see if the pressure is steady? I placed my ear to the fuel filler and can hear the pump whining. But I don’t really know what it is pumping. There was a code 54 (fuel pump circuit).
Other odd symptom is water dripping from tailpipe. I also wondered if my catalytic converter was getting plugged.
I also read the temperature sensor can confuse the computer if the sensor is malfunctioning. So I’m going to order one.
Any ideas and suggestions are most welcome.

My first inclination is a plugged fuel filter.

This is just an hypothesis as I have never experienced it. If you allow the fuel to get low in the tank, water can condense in the tank. The new ethanol gas is good at soaking it up but if repeated hot/cold cycles are used without topping off the tank, the ethanol can become overloaded by too much water condensant. If your tank is less than 1/2, I would fill it. Edit to add: after checking fuel pressure before the fuel filter.

Some auto parts stores have a rent a tool program if you only need something for one time use.

Water from a tailpipe in cold weather is normal. Ever noticed the big cloud of white steam from the tailpipe in cold weather? When the tailpipe cools off, water condenses on the cold surface inside the tailpipe. When you start the engine it blows this condensed water out before the tailpipe gets hot enough to turn it to steam.

I've heard of fuel pumps causing this issue. My friend sitting next to me said possibly a mass airflow sensor.

you would need to check the fuel pressure when it wont run, could be intermittent, could be a whole list of things, after checking for spark i would follow the bad code

It does sound like a filter to me .
Finding it is the key.
They hide those in the strangest places....and sometime in more than one place too.
I had a boat that did that.. ..finally found one inside the motor  , guess the one on the fuel line was too easy....
Hope you figure it out
stay tuned

I can wish you well but not help you, sorry. The water from the tailpipe is normal as it's not getting hot enough to dry up the condensation. That's why I run low milage, proven last year & month NON computer diesels. Whos going to support these sensors & computers in 30 years? Good Luck!

I just checked YouTube and found 2 videos about how to replace fuel filter on chevy express vans.  I would replace that first because it's cheaper than a fuel pump. There is probably a filter in the tank too.
