Genealogy
#21
While I'm not into genealogy personally, my brother has gotten into it big time, and has been tracing our family tree.  He recently sent the DNA swab to Ancestry and got the results back.  Since we have the same parents, I have to assume our DNA is pretty close.

Now my mother's parents came from Munich, in Bavaria.  My father's parents were Austrians from the old Austro-Hungarian Empire.  So I've always figured I was ethnically German.  I would occasionally half jokingly describe myself as an Austro-Bavarian-American.

Turns out I'm a real mutt.  Here are the results my brother got back:

Eastern European - 11%
Western European - 40%
Great Britain - 15%
Ireland - 6%
Italy/Greece - 9%
Iberian Peninsula - 2%
Scandinavia - 5%
Finnish/Northwest Russia - 3%
Caucuses - 8%
Middle East - 1%
Regards

John

2 sides of my family are extremely well documented. Then another side dead ends in a ghetto in Germany the other somewhat unknown goes somewhere in eastern Kentucky with a lot of same names.
I'm not lost. I'm exploring.

I have the alien great great grandfather who apparently dropped in from outer space... I hope someday one of his male descendants will take a y-dna test so we can figure out who he is!!

I want to add one interesting thing about the accuracy of these DNA tests.

My brother not only did his, his wife and daughter also submitted swabs and got their results.

There was a classification called European Jew.

My brother, and his wife, both came back as zero percent on that one.  The daughter came back as one percent European Jew.

We're still scratching our heads over that.

And each testing company uses different parameters to figure the admixture, so you'll get different answers from them all... However, a lot of folks upload their raw DNA data to gedmatch.com so they have a broader field of folks to match with, and the admixtures there seem to be better than all of the actual testing sites.

And judging from the way you keep changing your avatar, you also have multiple personalities.

my sister made everyone take dna test and mine came back weird, the family tree is well documented and basically everything european which shows up in others dna test, roughly 25% british,irish/scottish,scandinavian,german/french,what you would expect

mine 86% british and little stuff including under 1% polynesian, east asian/american indian

the average british person has about 40% british dna so i am 2x more british than the british and havent been in britain for 300 years

both my sisters are light eyed, fair skin that burns in the sun,i'm brown eyed, olive skin that tans in the sun

just not adding up especially compared to the well documented known family tree

and shouldnt british dna just be germanic/scandinavian? maybe a little left over something roman?
