My old boss hiked down, across & up the other side at 78 years old. He was in great shape but I was too before the broken back in 4 spots. MRSA, Ostiomyalitis & Sepses at the same time now ALS.

Can't believe with all the traveling around the US i've done I've not made it to the Grand Canyon. I'll add that to the short term bucket list.

I haven't been to the south rim. I sure won't be hiking to the canyon floor.

Brian , just watch the video like me. Less exhausting , mostly painless and the mpg is fantastic.....
But the spectacular views are 100 times better in person.
Those donkeys carry freight AND people...that guy filming probably ran back up the trail too !!

I mostly posted this so people could see exact difficulty level of the trails instead of just imagining dangling from ropes or ????

The trail to the bottom doesn't look very steep but in a few places I could see a short mule being at quite an angle. They probably have you walk those stretches though but I don't know. Either way, I won't be making the trip. I wouldn't even do it when I was in my 30's.

I rode horses in the Davis mountains of southwest texas (when I was a lot younger). Those horses could go places that I thought only deer could go. When it was loose rock, we walked the horses. A narrow trail on the side of a mountain was where if the horse started to go over the side was where you would jump off uphill while kicking the horse over the side and hopefully you didn't wait to long to jump. Nobody had to do it but was something you wanted to be prepared for.

We went to the north rim a long time ago before it got built up so much. There wasn't much there other than the lodge. Looking on google earth it has built up a lot. I will probably go back to the north rim and try the south rim on the shoulder season, maybe. Getting to be a LOT of people visiting the parks anymore. The people can be so rude in crowds.

I went down the other trail - Bright Angel Trail. Only a few hours to get down, but it took two days to get back up. By that time we were starving because we didn't take enough food. All we had was a small amount of oatmeal mixed with peanut butter. We were so unprepared. I was eighteen, or nineteen. So unprepared, but the vivid, beautiful memories make me want to go back.
Peace...
