The Lifetime warrantied Alternator
#91
after a six hour puke fest they had the gaul to ask me if i wanted to go on a week long tuna trip Angry

clean cut Sternwake first mate all love boat style?

after not getting my battery fully charged for a couple days i drove home with the alternator charging it,45 minutes or so and that made a huge difference in time it took my charger to top it off,2-4 hours opposed to 6-8+ with charger alone

When I was in Fiji 20 years ago, whenever the boat would ferry more than about 4 surfers between the island and the barrier reef, off the sides would go a Lure attached to some super thick fishing line. Less than 4 surfers and the boat could go too fast for trolling.

No fishing pole, no reel.  just a Piece of wood with a bunch of line wrapped around it.

This one day on the way back I'm all sunburnt and surfed out and sitting in back next to driver, closest to the fishing line, and boom the transom takes a hit, and the fishing line is taught and running sideways. Startingly quickly, I swear I could feel the stern getting pulled sideways with the fish.

The Fijian Boat driver's hands and feet were among the most calluoused I ever seen,  and I looked at him, indicated I'd take the helm if he wanted to Handline in whatever behemoth just hit the lure.

He smiled and shook his head. Nodded towards me, smiling with mirth.
I looked at my hands, palms and fingers all wrinkly and soft from surfing for 4 hours straight.  The other surfers on the boat were so oblivious they did not even look back when the driver cut the throttle, none of them would want any thing to do with handlining in whatever was on the line.  Pommies, further reinforcing my low opinion of them.

There's a Definite technique to handlining a big fish from a moving boat, and one needs to learn it quick or their hands will get all cut up.  Not really good for grabbing the rails of a surfboard.  I'd pulled in some smaller Trevally, and was impressed just how much a fish that size could fight, but when I grabbed the line and folded it under my hand and pulled I felt the weight and power of this fish, I was not really relishing the fight.  Its far different to feel a fish's power at the end of a fishing pole right after it strikes.

I resigned myself to the task and was determined to make short work of it, reeling it in quickly and dumping loose line at my feet, but when the fish saw the boat the effer really put on a burst of speed and the tail came out, and the driver says:
" Tuna"

My arms and hands were already exhausted, and there was some at least 20 yards more line to pull in and the fish was fighting for its life.

I did manage to get it to the side of the boat and the driver helped me lift it over the gunwhale.  It was likely about 40 LBs.

It was delicious, and my hands were not bloody, but they were not happy either. White striations all over them which took many days to fade

There was only about 7 surfers staying in teh camp on the island and no electricity and no refrigeration, so one of the Fijian invited his family to come and help eat the fish.

They do not fillet it, just gut it, slice it and roast it and peel off flakey sections with their hands.  The Fijians eating with us were speaking Fijian and each one looked up at me and asked to see my hands, then would show me theirs, and their callouses  on their palms and fingers were as thick as those on my feet, which back then were quite robust.

The next couple days  when going back and forth from the barrier reef, I decided to not sit in back next to the driver, and got to watch some other surfers handline in the catch.  Some did well, some others gave up, dropped the line and someone else would have to take over.   When the driver took over, when it was safe enough to do so, he'd finish the task in 1/10th the time of any surfer, punhook the fish, and return the lure back over the side and twist the throttle while the fish was trying to beat everybody in the boat to pieces.

Using a fishing pole thereafter, always seemed like cheating.

Well then ....
You know !
That was a little one.
Imagine one 10 or more times that.
And yeah , some do get landed on hand lines here too.
Now change out the fish to a 500# shark.
Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr either would be too much for me these days...

That 40#er would be about my limit .
I usually use a 3' dock runner rod to make the small ones 18-28" feel huge !
I have a 4000 series reel on it though.
Also have a 9' rod , but that's just for fishing from shore tossin' the bait 75 yards>>>>>>>>>>>

Yep, I recall seeing some old black and white footage of Bluefin tuna that looked like they were 12 feet long and thousands of pounds.

Shame such magnificent creatures were so overfished.

I think I had a CA fishing license in 2003, never caught anything from shore The licenses expire at end of year, never bothered again. Full price still, if bought in December.

Can't call me an avid fisherman though.

In Baja when I used to spend several months a year down there I was getting Halibut from shore and lots of surf perch, which can fight really well considering their size. Never use bait, always lures.

I miss Baja.
Freeking tweekers ruined it for me. been 12+ years now.

I got alternatorbrainitis today, combined with lack of sleep.

Walk in another circle, fool.

grrrrr.

There never was a license requirement for salt water here,,, until one day a few years back...
Now you have to get a fresh water license and pay an extra dollar for salt water.
........there aren't any fresh water fish big enough to be worth the effort as far as I'm concerned.
So far ,,,,no wardens have asked for my license.,,
In 2 more years , I can get a lifetime license for free ! It's the hunting , fishing , everything license too !

Those huge tuna used to be a regular sight down at the docks,,,,even had a tournament with prizes...
The Japanese would come and buy 'em up for big $$$$$$ sushi .
They still catch some every year but not as many fer sure.

The Boat....

Owner reeled in the unlimited budget for ideal to more practical yet capable and potentially expandable system

First, the house bank will be either 8 or 10 Lifeline gc-2's that they call GPL-4CT

https://lifelinebatteries.com/products/m...s/gpl-4ct/

The existing battery interconnects are 2 or 4AWG hammer crimps. We've ordered the FTZ leverage crimper that Mainsail recommends. I'll be making all new battery cables, likely 2/0 awg. Should be a huge time saver over the Junklike harbor freight hydraulic crimper and yield much better results.

That wasn't the budget part

Only One detroit diesel is getting a new alternator.

Thjat is the budget part.
It will be the Delco 28SI that Mainsail has converted to external regulation and upgraded the Diodes and had the Stator rewound for 200 amps.

It will be controlled by a Balmar MC 614H programmable voltage regulator.

The Detroit diesel uses Dual V belt pulleys. TO get full rated output safely, I need to use a 10 groove serpentine belt. Might be looking at custom pulley fabrication for that. That's been budgeted out, for now.

Mainsail offers his modified delco 28SI with a dual V belt option, but says to limit it to 130 amps via the balmar regulator. I was trying to angle for using two alternators for 260 amps max, but thats another 700$, nixed, for now.

I'll be having to thicken the cabling from alternator to ACR's. Think its only 2 awg, Ok for 130 amps, not for 200.

And Fiona is upset that i am typing, instead of cooking some pepper medley vegetable laced pasta to put into her Salmon Kibble. Grunt, paw the air, grunt again.

Hold on Daangnabbbitttt.

My Alternator Guru contact blew my strategy out of the water, and I am very thankful.

What weird is these alternators are not driven by the crankshaft pulley, but if they were a pushrod v8, imagine an exterior pulley where the camshaft resides.

Detroit diesels. No Idea whats going on internally but this camshaft pulley, spins opposite direction of the cranksahft pulley. Just noticed that today when back in the engine room.

The alternator therefore spins counterclockwise.

The Delco 28si with its dual internal fans are not designed to spin CCW, cooling would be horrible. Instead of sucking in air from front and back and expelling it out the the circumference of the case as designed, it would suck air in the circumference and blow hotter air against the bearings and pulley up front and rectifier and bearings out the back. Had I gone with 28Sis they's get way too hot.

The guru brought up the fact one detroit might spin opposite direction, for counter rotating props. Both engines revolve same direction clockwise, but both alternators spin counterclockwise.

Guru recommeded a 320 amp Leece Neville an its single external fan does not care about CW or CCW, and 2 of them cost the same as one CMI modified 28SI.

Today also found the parallel misalignment of starboard engine pulleys, and the drive pulley v belt dwidth is 3/8, and uses a 3/8 nich belt but the alternator pulley, stamped steel instead of machined from cold rolled steel is 1/2 inch. 3/8 inch belt in a 1/2 inch pulley. It works, but Fvcking hell.

The starboard alternator was able to produce 55 amps a couple hundred rpms above idle.
The port alternator makes nothing with increased rpm.
Owner wanted to take boat out today. we did. Hydraulics steering rudders failed shortly after leaving the slip, was able to steer it back into slip vie reversing one engine and forWARD TH EOTHER.

The hydraulic fittings on the ram were hideously rusted. His regular mechanic declared the boat sound. I saw those fittings and saw many many dollar signs and was once again glad I do not own a boat. He is not really mechanically inclined and my opinion was your gonna have to call a guy, I've no experience doing this and will just waste time speculating on how it should work and exactly where and what failed.

Once again the level of care this old boat needs is overwhelming. I think its a full time job for one person who has some other significant income.

He was overwhelmed too. I thugh he was gonna be like tiome to get rid of teh boat, but instead he was like, nope, I'm gonna use it, call a pro, youstill up for doing alternators and batteries?

I am, but The budget in order to achieve super high amperage recharging is cut.
The 3/8" drive pulleys are limiting factors. a 320 amp alternator can turn such belts into dust and smoke if trying to feed a large depleted AGm battery bank.

Strategy is to find out what the limits of Dual 3/8" V belts using the Balmar mc-614 voltage regulator, and push them to near their limit, and replace the belts more often. Gonna try to achieve perfect pulley alignment.

The one functioning alternator still works. For now just going to let it add to whatever the other alternator can make. I'm thinking we can get over 200 amps into 880 amp hours of depleted lifelines, which meets their 20% minimum charge rate when deeply cycled.

I brusied my heel when docking the ruderless boat, jumping to the dock. not 18 anymore, dumbass.

Fiona we are going for a short walk only. I can barely support any weight on my heel, though at first I did not even know I hurt it. Took a while for it to get sore, and now I have to walk on ball of foot and can still feel pain in my heel.

Freaking boats.

Yeah reverse rotation. It’s not just Detroit’s. I made a similar error running belt driven water pumps. Looking into the engine compartment on a boat is reverse, generally speaking, from bumper into engine bay. So common error.

Water going out the in door was funny to those watching but I felt awfully stupid. Lol. Luckily I had room and could just rotate the pumps 180.

Working out alternator charging gremlins and design is a pain in the ass. But I have faith. Look forward to more.
