Bread is just raw toast.

Abnorm, thanks for your fine porn, and contributions to the noble art of bread burning. Smile

Here's a simple kludge to improve one's bagel toasting:

My pan is too small to toast both halves without some minor surgery (it's trivial to reassemble):

While waiting for it to toast, I used a spoon to press down, which is tedious, then I suddenly remembered the gadgets designed to "press" tortillas and other items to speed up cooking, and lusted for one. Smile
Since I'm counting pennies, immediately suppressed the lust, Brain went into Creative Mode, wondered what I could kludge, and looked around...

... and found a pretty good field expedient bagel press:

Smile

Here's the finished bagel (after flipping):

I still need to perfect my technique, but not bad for my first try. Smile
By then, I was almost out of bagels, but will buy another bag (@Aldi) just before my next boondocking. Smile

Techie Notes:
I did have water in the kettle, so it felt like the perfect weight. Smile
I used about 3 to 4 grams of butane to toast a single bagel (sample size of two bagels (I did toast one or two others, but did not separately measure the toast fuel)).
That works out to about 3 to 4 cents each.

Next time, I will probably try a folded paper towel between the kettle and bagel, so I won't have to clean the kettle bottom (then I'll use the paper towel as my plate/cleanup).

Kaylee: just pick up a new red fired-clay brick the next time you're passing Home Depot (etc).  48 cents.  Can also be used for a door stop and to squash bugs.

Ddarnell is that big enough to press a bagel down?
I'm confused.

TrainChaser, while I'm fully happy with my kettle's capability (and enjoying its frugal multi-purpose elegance), your bug squashing point is superb! Smile

I could use the kettle, but am certain major spillage/chaos would result.
I'm skeptical of using the same item for both bug squashing and anything food related, but definitely need to get something for bugs.
I'm about to hit the road, so if anyone would kindly start a bug squashing tool thread, it would be welcome. Smile

OH , pan too small for that much bagel ?

Looks dry for me ....
I like using coconut oil , sprayed on the bagel not the pan.

The Repel is for the bugs , don't use on the bagels . (It doesn't taste very good.....oh and don't wipe your lips using the hand that you just sprayed ! )
stay tuned

My grandson got ahold of the garlic press. When my daughter caught him she asked him what he was doing. He said he was squishing bugs...
I'm not lost. I'm exploring.
