Writer's Search History: An Open Letter To The NSA

Google gets approximately 100 billion searches per month. (Carlyn Greenwald/Neon Tommy)

To the NSA Worker Monitoring My Search History:

Let me explain myself before you find anything that crazy—not in the “I’m guilty” kind of way, but in the “clearly there’s a mix up” way.
I’m a writer. A crime writer, to be specific. A crime writer who has to do some crazy research sometimes. Call it a problem of the digital age: for someone like me, college student, stricken with laziness, the library just isn’t the number one destination for answering the little questions, like how to remove fingerprints from a dead body.
That “can you kill someone with a dumbbell” search really was nothing more than commonplace goggling to give the central murder for my book some authenticity. It’s going to be one of those cases where the murder occurs in the heat of the moment, and the killer simply grabs whatever's right in front of him. In this case, a dumbbell. (I swear, I don’t even own a dumbbell.)
“How to rob a grave” is the same thing. Trust me, I have no interest in digging up Great-Grandma Rose anytime soon.

“How many years do you get for killing a police officer?” There had to be an insolent teenager who tried some bad moves in one of my books, and I needed to know how long he’d be locked away for pulling a stunt like that in real life.
Please, please ignore the “what happens if you get shot in the balls.” From what I read, it’s pretty bad, and I mean only my characters would be tempted to inflict that kind of injury. I swear.
Also, about all the drug searches, you know, the “what does it feel like to be on speed” and “how to snort cocaine properly”—those aren’t me either. I was trying to decide on an illegal stimulant one of my characters was going to use to give himself to strengthen himself in order to carry out revenge. I decided speed was too out of character and went with cocaine. Honestly, check anything surrounding that block of searches—I have not searched how to snort cocaine since.
Please don’t be alarmed by the “what happens when police seize your drugs” search either; a drug bust from the point of view of the cops was going to be an opening scene in one of my books.
Finally, when I was looking up all those searches about fourteen-month-old cognitive development and how to tell if you’re pregnant…it was for a character in a book. Honestly.
And no, I don’t have any ostriches stowed away in my dorm room.
Sorry for the alarm; feel free to return to scanning for signs of terrorists.
Sincerely,
Writer

The internet. Nothing is private no matter what you use. Someone somewhere can find anything you post, search for and all your private information and that's a fact. I try to make a habit of only posting stuff I'd be comfortable enough with on a billboard along the side of an interstate. As far as popup, ads, history and the like, I use Firefox (the newest one always updated) with a plethora of blocking features with the primary one being Adblock Plus. I also use a VPN and a leak detector/preventer because even the best VPN can leak your real IP address at times. On Facebook I use Facebook Purity to shut down annoying features. What I'm trying to find now is a good way to stop those annoying recommended channels on YT. And, while it might be a form of paranoia or OCD or what ever you might happen to name it, about every 20 minutes I delete my browser history. Every night I wipe my profile clean and run several cleaners and a registry cleaner. I guess this all stems back when I used to live in my truck full time and had to do all my financial requirements online. I know nothing is 100% when it comes to this whiz bang communication system but I feel that the more difficult it is to find anything about me the more the nefarious individuals will leave me alone and go after soft targets. I don't do anything illegal or even questionable on the internet or anywhere for that matter as I find that repugnant so I have nothing to hide, I just see it like I'm at the dining room table and someone is nose pressed against my window looking in.

Unless you use VPNs and third party proxys, tunneling, TOR browser, or equivalent, your ISP (landline or wireless) knows almost everything you do and everywhere you go on the internet.

Closed Circuit for MTD:

The best way to get youtube to stop suggesting 'related' videos is to unsubscribe from ALL channels.

You will still get suggested videos, but they become much more random and varied, based loosely on your recent viewing habits and some of the ad cookies in your browser.

Also, you can manually turn off 'history' in youtube settings, and that will help reduce related suggestions.

I have a hand full of YT folks I follow so I guess I'll just have to put up with the annoyances. Just checked, 7 of them.

As an option, you can create a bookmark folder with those youtube channels bookmarked in that folder.

You will need to manually check them every few days to stay current.

But it is no longer availible.

I am going to take away it is because every vandweller grabbed a copy with their insulating bubble wrap and as we speak it is being read and used to wipe gorgeous behinds providing dual benifits to my breathern.

See I am just a positive type person! LOL!
