I don't know what the cost of the absorption unit is on that fridge these days, but if you wanted to keep the old fridge and have it repaired, I can change it out for no labor cost. I've done that 4 or 5 times successfully. lol, 0 times unsuccessfully, knock on wood.

That is very kind of you! Thanks. I’m going to be in the Redwoods for a couple of months it seems. If I don’t get it dialed in up here I’ll let you know.

Well, Snik, I know these things because I'm in the process of acquiring a new van. Piece by piece. Ran into minor problems in Quartzite, and needed a new thermostat, and that's how I hooked up with Evrett's Towing. Boss is Frank, old guy, knows a lot.
We left Q, and near Julian CA, the damn front brakes froze up tight. No cell, ranger came along and took me to his office, called AAA, great guy driving the car carrier. He was going to take us to a AAA recommended place, but I asked him where he'd take his car, and he said Pete's. The look of the place doesn't necessarily inspire confidence, and half the guys look like gang bangers, but they know what they're up to, and took the best care of us, and were just lovely.
Left there, got over to the coast, visited old New England friends in Encinitas, left there, and the reverse went out in Anaheim. I wish I could remember the name of the fellow who recommended Cal Transmission to me, because he was another one who was so helpful, but, again, The guys at Cal Trans were just wonderful, and went out of their way to get the trans rebuilt ASAP.
Next was the tire that blew out just west of Tonopah, which resulted in the discovery that the tires were really dried out, so four of those. Goodyear in Henderson, Nevada.
WHich brings us to today! LAst night, the van kind of hi coughed a couple of times, and the light for emissions/02 stuff came on, so this AM, went to Autozone to get their free code reader thingy, but it turns out that none of those places do anything for pre 1996. Pep boys recommended JK Automotive, and they've been great, so far. Having spent several hours in their waiting room, today, and having watched their interaction with other customers, I'm impressed. Careful, thoughtful re: people's circumstances, ready with recommendations and priorities. Good brunch.
So, that's my mechanical saga, thus far. I am extraordinarily grateful for how every single person we've dealt with, throughout our various trials, has extended such loving kindness to Ed. IT spills over onto me, and makes me want to take them all home, and make them my family. Though maybe they are, already.

Oh, Doug, I miss you! We're in Albuquerque right now, hopefully outta here by noon, tomorrow. Headed home. Hoping not to get hit by a tornado, which I have some totally absurd worry about. How are you? Hope all your stuff is getting squared away. <3

Hello Heron, Doug just told me about this thread, so checking in....

Me and Doug are in Amarillo...its really cold and windy right now but we are boondocking on the private property of a friend of mine.

We could head west that way if you will be staying there or meet you somewhere, or you could camp here with us for a day or two and wait out this unpleasant weather with us.

Maybe we could go boondock at Lake Meredith (free) or Palo Duro Canyon.

There is a free RV museum here in Amarillo that is kinda cool....very close to I-40.

Let us know...

Just checked the hourly forecast for today and by around 2pm today it's supposed let up on the wind and warm up...so c'mon over and sit with us for a spell!

If you decide to head east on I-40 we are about 10 miles south of I-40 in Amarillo...we are kinda out in the country but still close to town for supplies and whatever. Flat, hard ground, no trees, but some buildings for shelter. Burn ban in effect so no campfires....but I have heat in my trailer and it's supposed to warm up.

Liz, if you will be passing thru Kentucky on your way east be sure to stop. I have plenty of room and way too many bass in my pond. No catch and release. They gotta go
